In den WarenkorbSecond edition, a re-setting of the illustrated edition of the same year using a smaller typeface and with some minor alterations. "Frederick Calvert, the notious Lord Baltimore, travelled in the Levant in 1763 and 1764 accompanied by the Anglo-Italian artist Francis Smith. Baltimore's account of his travels is succinct, but he…includes many specimens of poetry and oriental sayings" (Blackmer). This is the only substantial published work of one of the 18th century's most notorious peers, an eyewitness account of the Ottoman Empire written immediately before his sensational rape trial and early death. One of the many aristocratic Levant narratives published before the Napoleonic period, it sheds light on Calvert's attitude towards women and sexual customs. His discussion of temporary marriage, polygamy, and female beauty is often read alongside his notorious rape trial of the following year. Atabey 184; ESTC T144998. For the illustrated edition, see Atabey 183 and Blackmer 272. Octavo (183 x 111 mm), pp. [2], iv, 168. Engraved title page. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine ruled in gilt between raised bands, red morocco label, sprinkled edges. Very short crack to head of joints, corners lightly rubbed, insignificant worm hole to extreme lower margin throughout; a very good copy indeed.
