Auflage von 1967 leitete im deutschsprachigen Raum die bis heute andauernde intensive Saussure-Rezeption ein. 1916 v…eröffentlichten zwei Schüler Saussures drei Vorlesungen unter dem Titel 'Cours de linguistique générale'. Der Text beruhte auf den Mitschriften von drei Vorlesungen über allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft, die Saussure 1907 bis 1911 hielt. Der 'Cours' wurde nicht nur zum Ausgangspunkt für eine Reihe von neuen linguistischen Disziplinen (wie Phonologie, strukturalistische Morphologie, strukturalistische Syntax, strukturelle Semantik, Glossematik), sondern beeinflußte auch traditionelle Richtungen wie die Sprachgeschichte, Dialektologie und Sprachphilosophie. Aus dem Nachwort: Wie jedes große Werk lebt auch der 'Cours' dadurch weiter, dass er vielerlei Interpretationen zulässt. Seine Bedeutung kann aber wohl noch immer am treffendsten mit jener knappen Formulierung umschrieben werden, die Leonard Bloomfield schon 1923 in seiner Rezension gab: Der Wert des 'Cours' besteht in seiner klaren und genauen Darstellung der fundamentalen Prinzipien. Das meiste von dem, was der Autor sagt, lag schon seit langem 'in der Luft', die Systematisierung aber stammt von ihm. [.] Der entscheidende Punkt aber ist, dass de Saussure hier zum ersten Mal die Welt ausgemessen hat, in der die historische Grammatik des Indo-Europäischen (die große Errungenschaft des vorigen Jahrhunderts) nur ein einzelnes Teilgebiet darstellt; er hat uns die theoretische Grundlage für eine Wissenschaft von der menschlichen Sprache gegeben.

Il Cours è, senza esagerazione, la più importante opera di linguistica del Novecento e una delle più influenti opere filosofiche del secolo. Con questo libro nasce la linguistica moderna come scienza del sistema, ma soprattutto si inaugura un modo radicalmente nuovo di pensare il linguaggio: non più come nomenclatura delle cose, bensì come struttura differenziale, rete di relazioni in cui i segni non valgono per una sostanza propria, ma per il posto che occupano nel sistema. La distinzione tra langue e parole, la concezione biplanare del segno, l'arbitrarietà, il primato della sincronia, la definizione della lingua come sistema di differenze senza termini positivi: è qui che si definisce il lessico teorico da cui prenderà corpo lo Strutturalismo. E di qui si diramano linee decisive del pensiero novecentesco, dall'antropologia di Claude Lévi-Strauss alla psicoanalisi di Jacques Lacan, dalla semiotica alla teoria letteraria, fino a informare in profondità l'intero orizzonte delle scienze umane contemporanee. L'impatto è stato tale da oltrepassare i confini disciplinari, irradiandosi indirettamente anche nelle avanguardie artistiche del primo Novecento, dal Formalismo al Surrealismo, attraverso l'idea che forma e relazione precedano la sostanza e che il senso emerga da scarti, opposizioni, tensioni interne al sistema. A più di un secolo dalla pubblicazione, il Cours de linguistique générale non è soltanto un classico: è una matrice ancora operante. Le categorie saussuriane continuano a modellare, spesso in maniera sotterranea e imprevista, il modo in cui le scienze umane e non solo concepiscono i sistemi simbolici, le reti relazionali, i processi di significazione, le strutture culturali e sociali. Categorie che, anche quando vengono criticate o superate, lo sono su un terreno che quest'opera ha contribuito a rendere pensabile.
