Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. James Baldwin (Cover photograph) (illustrator). xv, [1], 367, [1] pages. Glossary. Illustrations. Notes. Selected Bibliography. Chapter 20 is titled Pathfinders and Aphrodites. The 95th Bomb Group (Heavy), the most highly decorated bomb group of World War II, participated in every major mission of the war in Europe from May 1943 through the war's end and was awarded an unprecedented three Presidential Unit Citations. Flying the celebrated B-17 Flying Fortress, the 95th was the first U.S. bomb group to bomb Berlin a feat that put it on the centerfold of Life magazine and the last group to lose a plane over Europe in World War II. Over six hundred men in the 95th never came home. The Wild Blue Yonder and Beyond is the first book to cover a World War II bomb group from its inception through the modern day. Rob Morris is a teacher with a lifelong interest in World War II air war. He is the author of seven books, including Untold Valor; Forgotten Stories of American Bomber Crews over Europe in World War II. Ian Hawkins became interested in the history of the Eighth Air Force when growing up in England surrounded by the airfields from which the aircrews flew. He is the author or editor of three books including B-17s Over Berlin: Personal Stories from the 95th Bomb Group. During WWII, the 95th Bombardment Group, was a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress unit in England, stationed at RAF Horham. It had the highest total claims of enemy aircraft destroyed of all Eighth Air Force Bomb Groups 425 aircraft. It was also the first U.S. Army Air Forces group to bomb Berlin. From 1947 to 1949 the 95th Bombardment Group served in the reserves. Utilizing interviews with nearly a hundred air war veterans, dozens of unpublished crew memoirs, all the bomb group's official mission reports from the National Archives, and nearly a hundred other sources, author Rob Morris (assisted by air war historian Ian Hawkins) provides a deep tactical and human understanding of the group. Also included are the stories of the veterans' wives and families, who fought a different kind of war at home, and the residents of Horham, whose tiny English village was suddenly on the war's front lines. Intensely human, exhaustively researched, and lovingly told, this book is certain to be a classic in the field and a resource for anyone interested in the workings of a World War II bomb group. The wing was activated in 1942 as the 95th Bombardment Group at Barksdale Field, Louisiana with the 334th, 335th, 336th, and 412th Bombardment Squadrons assigned. The group was equipped with Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses. The unit' final training was conducted at Rapid City Army Air Base, South Dakota. The air echelon processed flew its Forts to RAF Alconbury in the United Kingdom. The ground echelon sailed on the RMS Queen Elizabeth, arriving in May. The group arrived in England equipped with late model B-17F aircraft equipped with "Tokyo Tanks", additional fuel cells located outboard in the wings that gave this model additional range. It flew its first combat mission on 13 May 1943 against an airfield near Saint-Omer, France. For the next two months the 95th focused on attacking airfields and V-1 flying bomb launch sites in France. The entire 95th group moved to RAF Horham in June. The 95th began strategic bombing operations in July and continued until flying its last operation on 20 April 1945. Its targets included harbors, marshaling yards and industrial targets along with attacks on cities. On 13 June 1943 the group was leading in an attack on Kiel, Germany. The lead aircraft carried Brigadier General Nathan B. Forrest as an observer. The aircraft was hit by fighters. It was last seen spiraling out of control. General Forrest was the first United States general officer killed in action in Europe during the war. The group received its first Distinguished Unit Citation (DUC) during an attack on an aircraft factory at Regensburg, Germany on 17 August 1943 when it maintained its defensive formation despite severe attacks by enemy interceptor aircraft. On 10 October, during an attack on marshaling yards at Münster, Germany, the squadron was subjected to concentrated fighter attacks on the approach to the target and intense flak over the objective. The group's bombs were clustered close to the target. It was awarded a second DUC for withstanding these attacks to bomb its objective. From 20 to 25 February 1944 the group participated in the Big Week offensive against the German aircraft manufacturing industry. On 4 March, the squadron attacked Berlin, despite snowstorms and heavy cloud cover, the unit struck its target while under attack from enemy fighters. The cloud cover required the group to rely on a pathfinder from the 482d Bombardment Group to determine the release point. It received its third DUC for this operation. This mission was the first time any unit from Eighth Air Force had bombed Berlin. The group then bombed priority tactical targets during the preparation for and execution of Operation Overlord in June 1944, attacking communications and coastal defenses. It hit enemy troop concentrations to facilitate the Allied breakout at Saint-Lô. The 95th attacked troop concentrations during the Battle of the Bulge from December 1944 to January 1945 and bombed airfields to support Operation Varsity, the assault across the Rhine in March. The unit flew its last mission on 20 April 1945, when it attacked marshaling yards near Oranienburg. During its time with Eighth Air Force the 95th flew 320 missions, losing 157 aircraft, claimed the destruction of 425 German fighters. The squadron was was inactivated on 28 August 1945. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Industry-University Cooperative Chemistry Program has sponsored seven previous international symposia covering a wide variety of topics of interest to industrial and academic chemists. The eighth IUCCP symposium, held March 19-22, 1990, at Texas A&M University, represents a deviation from the former symposia, in that it is the first of a two-symposium series dedicated to the rapidly moving new field of industrial biochemistry that has beco~e known as biotechnology. Biotechnology is really not a new discipline, but rather is a term coined to describe the new and exciting commercial applications of biochemistry. The development of the field of biotechnology is a direct result of recombinant DNA technology, which began in earnest about 15 years ago. Today, we can routinely do experiments that were inconceivable in the early 1970's. Only comparatively simple technology available even in small laboratories is required to synthesize a gene and from it, to produce vast amounts of biological materials of enormous commercial value. These technical developments and others have stimulated increased activities in the field of enzyme biotechnology, using enzymes to catalyze 'unnatural' reactions to produce complex molecules with stereochemical precision. It is true today, we can readily produce DNA fragments that will encode any amino acid sequence that we might desire, but at this point, our foundation of basic knowledge falls short. The dream of 'designer enzymes' is still a fantasy, but the current wave of research activity and exciting new developments suggest that in the future the dream may become a reality.
