Vintage studio still photograph from the 1950 film. Based on Dorothy Baker's 1938 novel of the same name. Loosely based on the life of Bix Beiderbeck, an influential jazz cornetist who died prematurely at the age of 28. In the film, Kirk Douglas plays the Beiderbeck character, here named Rick Martin. His career is constantly on the rocks, owing in part to his insistence on improvisation despite his band leader's request he stick to the written music, and in part to his alcoholism. Notable for implying that one of the main characters was homosexual, although this was not overtly expressed in the film. Shot on location in California and New York. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.

Jerry Wald is best remembered for his long and successful association with Warner Brothers as both a screenwriter and producer of a number of notable films, including "Mildred Pierce" (1945), "Humoresque" (1946), "Key Largo" (1948), and "Flamingo Road" (1949). In the 1950s he moved to Twentieth Century-Fox, and was the producer there for "An Affair to Remember" (1957), "Peyton Place" (1957), and "Sons and Lovers" (1960). Based on the 1938 novel by Dorothy Baker, in turn loosely inspired by the life of famed jazz cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. A young trumpet player finds himself caught in a love triangle between a talented singer and a beautiful but disturbed heiress. Set and shot on location in Los Angeles and New York. Bound in light blue cloth with navy quarter leather binding, with five raised bands and gilt titles on the spine. Title page present, undated, with credits for screenwriter Carl Foreman and novelist Dorothy Baker. 158 leaves, with last page of text numbered 141. Mimeograph duplication, rectos only, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 7/9/49 and 8/25/49. Pages Near Fine, binding Good only, cloth lightly foxed, significant wear to the leather quarterbinding, though spine titles can still be read.

Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. Young Man with a Horn is based on the real life of jazz cornet player Bix Beiderbecke and was adapted for the movie Young Man With a Horn with Kirk Douglas, Doris Day, Lauren Bacall, Juano Hernández, and real-life Bix Beiderbecke friend and collaborator Hoagy Carmichael.
