The Vrttamālāstuti or a garland of metres: in praise [of Mañjuśrī], a hymn in 154 stanzas dedicated to the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī was composed by Jñānaśrīmitra, a philosopher and poet who taught at the university of Vikramaśīlā in the first half of the eleventh century. The uniqueness of this poem lies in its being both a eulogy and a treatise on prosody encompassing 150 metres, several of them previously unknown. The present book, its first complete English translation, is based on the critical edition by Michael Hahn, Shrikant Bahulkar, Mahesh Deokar and Lata Deokar of the Vrttamālāstuti and the commentary Vrttamālāstutivivrti of Śakyarakṣita. The translators have endeavoured to make this immensely challenging poem accessible to readers interested in Sanskrit literature and prosody as well as Buddhist philosophy and iconography.
