Su quella che era la qualità del suo gioco, o dei suoi successi, non possono sussistere dubbi: a 20 anni esordisce in campo internazionale vincendo, ex-aequo con Alechin, il torneo di Bad Nauheim, a ventuno, nel 1937, sbalordiva il mondo scacchistico con una impressionante serie di successi, giungendo al primo posto nei grandi tornei di Margate, Ostenda, Praga, Vienna e Sommering, lasciandosi alle spalle maestri del calibro di Alechin, Capablanca, Fine, Reshewsky, Flohr.
