Published as a deluxe gift book, the first four volumes feature fine engravings after original drawings by William Daniell from his travels in India during the late 1700s and the final volume with engravings by the Finden brothers after sketches by Thomas Bacon and Captain Meadows Taylor. The first in the series (1834) centres on Madras, with the following volume for 1835 dedicated to the Bengal Presidency, particularly Calcutta, and that for 1836, Delhi. The issue for 1838 includes the lives of the Mughal Emperors Humayun and Akbar, with the final volume for 1840 given to "Tales, Legends, and Historical Romances".
