The Dover Patrol was a Royal Navy command of the First World War, notable for its involvement in the Zeebrugge Raid on 22 April 1918, it formed a discrete unit of the Royal Navy based at Dover and Dunkirk for the duration of the First World War. Its primary task was to prevent enemy German shipping, chiefly submarines, from entering the English Channel en route to the Atlantic Ocean, thereby obliging the German Navy to travel via the much longer route around Scotland which was itself covered by the Northern Patrol. The handwriting is a little difficult to decipher, but it may be addressed to Major-General J. E. B. Seely, Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire. Seely was Secretary of State for War prior to theFirst World War, and a friend of Winston Churchill. He led one of the great cavalry charges at the Battle of Moreuil Wood in 1918.A critical analysis of this important and highly acclaimed first-hand account of the war, written by Churchill before his fame as the wartime Prime Minister. This work chiefly examines Volume III, in which Churchill provides an analysis of Haig's strategy, but also the Dardanelles campaign.This work was written by a variety of distinguished critics, including Colonel the Lord Sydenham of Combe, Admiral Sir Reginald Bacon, General Sir Frederick Maurice, General Sir W.
