Boards remarkably bright and vivid, just gently brushed at spine tips and corners. Gift inscription dated 1947 neatly inked on the front free endpaper and the date of original publication has been added in manuscript to the base of the title page. Endpapers have a hint of toning else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. An equisite little volume. It was first published in 1834 by Longmans. The text of this copy is taken from the third edition in 1836.

Some staining to boards and hinge of rear endpaper, and some wear to spine ends. Bookplate and stamp of John Fuller to front endpapers and a small name to title 'Henry Whittall' in ink, otherwise clean internally with no markings. VG condition. A work originally published in 1834, aimed at the majority who have not had the opportunity to learn the manners of contemporary society, with hints on etiquette of subjects such as: marriage, dinners, smoking, snuff, fashion, dress, music and dancing. It was the basis for a couple of the 'amusing' reprints of the 1960s. "At family dinners, where the common household bread is used, it should never be cut less than an inch and a half thick. There is nothing more plebeian than thin bread at dinner." 15 cms tall Small 8vo.
