La batalla puso fin a las pretensiones del rey Juan I de Castilla sobre la corona de Portugal. Pedro López de Ayala, pese a sus cincuenta y tres anos, no podía dejar de participar en ella en defensa de su señor. La batalla fue encarnizada y el rey castellano tuvo que dirigirla desde su lecho de enfermo. Pero al final de la jornada la suerte estaba echada a favor de las tropas portuguesas y Pedro López de Ayala estuvo entre los prisioneros de los lusitanos. A partir de aquí historia y leyenda se mezclan. Se dice que el canciller, ensangrentado, no cedió en la batalla y que estuvo encarcelado en una jaula durante gran parte de su encierro en Óbidos. Año y medio duro la prisión, periodo en el cual Ayala se entrego al ejercicio literario y a la oración. Allí escribiría los primeros esbozos de lo que sería una de las obras mas monumentales del siglo xiv. El Rimado de Palacio es un extenso poema moral que refleja los principales conflictos de la segunda mitad del siglo XIV. Escrito en primera persona, comienza como si fuera una confesión que un "yo-expositor" realiza de sus pecados. Así pasa revista a los diez mandamientos, los siete pecados capitales, las siete obras de misericordia, los siete sentidos y las siete obras espirituales con las que expurga su alma. Todo esto prepara a este "yo-expositor" para que se explaye sobre los dos males que aquejan al mundo: la crisis del gobierno y la crisis espiritual.
