In den WarenkorbSee Cary's entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp, 12mo. On the first leaf of a bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and folded for postage. The recipient is not named, but the item is from the papers of Lady Maria Theresa Lewis, and the letter is written to her first husband, the novelist Thomas Henry Lister (1800-1842), whose father Thomas Lister of Armitage Park was a childhood friend of Cary's (see his 1847 biography by his son). The present item begins 'My dear Sir, / I construed your silence just as you have explain'd it to me; and was as sure you were doing all you could for me, as if you had told me so while you were doing it. The favour you have been the means of my obtaining is on may accounts prized by me very highly. It places the last of my boys who was without employment, in a situation extremely well suited to him, and in some measure under your superintendence and control; and it comes to me through the medium of yourself the son of my earliest friend, and of Lord John Russell, a statesman whom I sincerely honour. / I am, dear Sir, / ever faithfully your's / H. F. Cary.'.

Zustand: Good. - Closely written page from an autograph manuscript penned on an 8 inch high by 5 inch wide sheet of lined paper. with several pencil corrections. The paper is a bit darkened with the 2 bottom corners lightly creased. Good. The manuscript is headed "Bonnie's Horoscope / By Belle C. Greene" with the numeral '"4250" above right. The story concerns Bonnie, the orphan niece of "two quaint little old ladies." "Bonnie's real name was Laura Ann, but some young relatives who loved her very much had first called her 'Bonnie Annie Laurie'".This latter name is the title of an 1883 march by John Philip Sousa, inspired by an old Scottish ballad. Greene has made numerous pencil corrections in the manuscript.Belle C. Greene [1842-1926], born in Pittsfield, Vermont, was orphaned at the age of four and was brought up and educated in New Hampshire by distant relatives. She began writing in 1881 and, in spite of kindly but hardly encouraging advice from a friend, she succeeded in selling a humorous sketch to "Godey's Lady's Book". She continued writing for the magazine for a year, concluding with a novelette later published in book form, "A New England Idyll". She continued publishing novels and collections of her humorous sketches, attracting considerable critical attention, both positive and negative. In 1887-88 she made an extensive tour of California and the Pacific coast. Her contributions to newspapers in Los Angeles and San Diego added greatly to her reputation.
