Original blue cloth richly stamped in gilt. Spine mildly sunned. Light rubbing to rear board and to spine area. Spine ends creased and starting to fray. Inner front hinge cracked but holding. Small, closed tear to inner rear hinge. Title page Two plates partly loosened (nos. 4 and 46). Good+. * Works of art from Benin, West Africa 'obtained' - or rather taken by force during the punitive expedition in 1897 after the unsuccesful attempt of annexing the kingdom. Some of the bronzes are now in the Pitts Rivers Museum.
