Van Dieman's Land, and surrounding country, now exhibiting in the Panorama, Strand. First edition. Folding frontispiece with key. 8vo. Later wrappers. 12pp. London, Nichols and Sons, One of two Australian panoramas exhibited by Burford at Leicester Square. ?Earle's importance in the history of Australian art and in the development of lithographic art in Australia is such that every serious collection should have some example of his work. [This pamphlet] may be the only representative examples a collector will ever find.? (Wantrup). A charming publication promoting an exhibition of a view of Hobart. Half of the twelve pages of text are devoted to a brief history of the city, from its discovery by Abel Tasman to its circumnavigation by Bass and Flinders and the circumstances and hardship of its early settlement. The remaining six pages describe different marked locations on the frontispiece: areas such as Mounts Wellington and Nelson, the military barracks, the jail, Kangaroo Point, the Derwent etc. There is a description of a group of convicts, broadly covering the conditions of their passage and subsequently upon arrival. Burford includes some further information specifically regarding female convicts. There is also a description of Indigenous Tasmanians, in which an account is relayed of the first act of aggression perpetrated by the men of Lieut Bowen against these peaceful and friendly people. This goes on to perpetuate the myth of their disappearance: ?Their numbers were not at any time great, and are fast decreasing.? It is also notable for including a depiction of the Brig Cyprus, on which there was a mutiny on 6 August 1829 during a routine voyage from Hobart to the Macquarie Harbour Penal Station. The 19 mutineers sailed the Cyprus to New Zealand, the Chatham Islands, and then Niuatoputapu (Keppel Island). While the leader, Ferguson, remained there, others continued on to Japan, the Marianas, and China. The panorama was based on a series of paintings by Augustus Earle which he produced in 1827 and sent to Burford. Earle created a similar series of images of Sydney the same year though published in 1829. ?His panorama at the Strand and later removed to Leicester Square, for many years formed one of the chief attractions of London.? (Ferguson). Ferguson, 1425; Wantrup, 222.
