In den Warenkorb17th-century gilded morocco binding [ca. 20 x 14 cm] decorated with a wide gilt-tooled "fanfare-style" border featuring fleurs-de-lis and floral motifs. The corners are accented with fine, naturalistic animal tools: the upper corners feature gilt-tooled stags (deer) in profile, and the lower corners feature gilt-tooled hares (rabbits); spine with raised bands and gilt title. 136 unnumbered leaves. With 40 woodcut illustrations, including a large nearly full-page woodcut of a King (Louis XI) in council, the title, and numerous woodcut initials. Title page printed in red and black with a large woodcut illustration of a courtly scene. The very rare 1532 edition of this famous collection of French short stories. Modeled after Boccaccios Decameron, the Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles were traditionally attributed to Antoine de la Sale and said to have been collected at the court of Philippe le Bon, Duke of Burgundy. The stories are celebrated for their wit, gallantry, and sharp satirical look at 15th-century society, particularly the clergy and the bourgeoisie. This edition by Olivier Arnoullet is notable for its charming Lyonnaise woodcuts, which capture the lively and often scandalous nature of the prose. Its significance lies in its secular realism. Unlike earlier medieval exempla designed to teach a moral lesson, these stories were written purely for entertainment (joyeuseté). They offer a vividand often crudesnapshot of 15th-century life, focusing on the cunning of women, the hypocrisy of the clergy, and the "gallantry" of the nobility. Historically, it is considered the first great work of French prose fiction: "sometimes falsely attributed to Antoine de la Sale, was composed at the request of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, around 1462, by a court writer, perhaps Philippe Pot. Several Burgundian lords, for their own amusement, take turns telling bawdy stories, full of revelry, amorous contests, feints, and wordplay, which form a sequel to Boccaccio's Decameron and foreshadow the tales of the 16th century. Yet, behind the apparent gaiety, one senses the anxieties of a century ending badly: chivalric loyalty has disappeared, filial love, marriage, even friendship are affected by the decline of morals and the rise of falsehood. The original text was adapted, compiled, and reworked several times in the 16th century" (Bechtel, "Catalogue des gothiques français", 545, N-78). Condition: The fine 17th century binding is in very good condition with only minor rubbing to the joints and extremities; leaves with some damp-staining, most visible in the margins but occasionally affecting the text area; 4 pages with heavier ink staining. 4 leaves with restorations: One of the leaves with a restored missing corner fragment; another leaf with a replaced missing part (with some loss to text and 1 woodcut), the last text leaf with small marginal replacement (with minor loss of text), the last leaf with the full page woodcut mounted and with remargined loss to outer margin (without text loss) This edition is very rare; the Universal Short Title Catalogue (USTC 21915) records only 2 other copies in institutional holdings worldwide, located at the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the British Library. --- "It is a masterpiece of style; and the first work in prose, without question, in which the French language shows that clarity and easy elegance which made it the language of civilized Europe" (Viollet-le-Duc, "Bibliographie des chansons, fabliaux, contes en vers et en prose", 1859, p. 144). Provenence: Handwritten ownership note from the 19th century on the front flyleaf: "G. Schlatter". // Bibliography: Rés. Y2 730, G 10501; Viollet-le-Duc, p. 144; Bechtel N-78). // Wir, das Antiquariat Steffen Völkel, kaufen und verkaufen alte Bücher, Handschriften, Zeichnungen, Autographen, Grafiken und Fotografien. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fine. 2nd Edition. Avec sa préparation & son usage, pour le plus part des indispositions du corps humain, ensemble les diverses façons de le falsifier, & les marques pour le recognoistrè: Composé premierement en Latin par Iean Neander, Médecin à Leyden (.). In-8. Pp. [1] f.e., [8], 342, [2], [1] r.e.; 9 total engraved plates of which [7] outside the numeration and 2 within it. Woodcut ornament on the title page, woodcut initials and decorations. Rebacked in old full parchment with (discolored) title at the spine; endpapers renewed in modern times. The present copy has been physically compared to the one conserved at UCLA, and digitally with the one at Harvard, after noticing a slightly different kind of paper at the title page. Further research pointed out that the 1626 "edition" is actually the 1625v (first edition) with a new title page. The title page exists in different tirage. In fact, the UCLA one is differnet than the present one (see accent of the E in Traicté) and comma after "panacee". It is though the same as Harvard. The volume is overall uniform and attractive, with charming fresh plates. Near fine. Graesse IV, 652; Waring II, 709; Ferchl 379; Leclerc, Bibliotheca Americana , 407; Sabine XII, 576. First French edition of Johann Neander's celebrated treatise on tobacco, translated by Jacques Veyras, in the 1626 issue with a cancellans title-page. The edition was first issued only a few months earlier, in October 1625, and copies retaining the original 1625 title-page are extremely rare, with the most recent example recorded by Rare Book Hub apparently dating to 1977. The Latin first edition had appeared in 1622 and seems to be less sought after than the French edition. Neander presents a wide-ranging study of tobacco and its medicinal applications, firmly rejecting its consumption merely for pleasure while advocating its therapeutic virtues. The work is illustrated with nine remarkable engraved plates, including botanical studies, exceptionally early images of Native Americans cultivating and curing tobacco, and some of the earliest printed depictions of long smoking pipes and the Persian kalian (hookah, shisha, or narghile). This 1626 issue of the first French edition retains the splendid series of nine engraved plates first published with the 1625 issue, among the earliest European depictions of tobacco and its cultivation and use around the world. The images, executed in the clear, linear manner characteristic of early scientific illustration, combine the instructional clarity of a herbal with the curiosity of an ethnographic record. They are conventionally attributed to Moses van Uyttenbroeck, although the French edition does not name the artist. The first three charming botanical plates include "Tabac mâle" and "Tabac femelle," presented as botanical portraits with verses beneath the figures. They are followed by three especially notable scenes depicting Native Americans cultivating and curing tobacco, illustrating successive stages of cultivation, drying, and preparation of the leaves, with careful representations of tools, baskets, and processing arrangements. The final three engravings are equally remarkable, depicting various pipes and the Persian kalian, among the earliest printed representations of these smoking instruments in Europe. The engraver's sharp outlines, delicate shading, and slight naïveté give the series a distinctly seventeenth-century character, poised between scientific treatise and decorative art. The text begins with Neander's systematic discussion of the names and origins of tobacco, its different varieties and qualities, the proper seasons for planting and harvesting, and methods of preparation. Among these is the preparation called Caldo (p. 26 ff.), a medicinal mixture based on a fermented drink, ginger powder, and other spices. Moses van Uyttenbroeck (attr.) (illustrator). …
