Zustand: Very Good. London: David Nutt, 1893. First Thus. Duodecimo. 209 pages. Blue cloth stamped in decorative gilt. Worn at extremities and cracked at top of front joint. Binding and interior are sound. A sensation upon its publication in 1669, this epistolary work of fiction has had its authorship disputed over the centuries. Here attributed to Alcoforado, many scholars believe de la Vergne to be the real author. Albert Camus does clear things up a little in The Fall, declaring, "I was not the Portuguese nun.".

No one else had any hand in it.I have never made any secret of the authorship, but as I have constantly endeavored in any literary work I have been able to do for many years back to elevate the Irish subject out of the burlesque, I have an indisposition to place my name on the title-page of so very rollicking a piece as Father Tom" (p. vii). In den Warenkorb17th-century gilded morocco binding [ca. 20 x 14 cm] decorated with a wide gilt-tooled "fanfare-style" border featuring fleurs-de-lis and floral motifs. The corners are accented with fine, naturalistic animal tools: the upper corners feature gilt-tooled stags (deer) in profile, and the lower corners feature gilt-tooled hares (rabbits); spine with raised bands and gilt title. 136 unnumbered leaves. With 40 woodcut illustrations, including a large nearly full-page woodcut of a King (Louis XI) in council, the title, and numerous woodcut initials. Title page printed in red and black with a large woodcut illustration of a courtly scene. The very rare 1532 edition of this famous collection of French short stories. Modeled after Boccaccios Decameron, the Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles were traditionally attributed to Antoine de la Sale and said to have been collected at the court of Philippe le Bon, Duke of Burgundy. The stories are celebrated for their wit, gallantry, and sharp satirical look at 15th-century society, particularly the clergy and the bourgeoisie. This edition by Olivier Arnoullet is notable for its charming Lyonnaise woodcuts, which capture the lively and often scandalous nature of the prose. Its significance lies in its secular realism. Unlike earlier medieval exempla designed to teach a moral lesson, these stories were written purely for entertainment (joyeuseté). They offer a vividand often crudesnapshot of 15th-century life, focusing on the cunning of women, the hypocrisy of the clergy, and the "gallantry" of the nobility. Historically, it is considered the first great work of French prose fiction: "sometimes falsely attributed to Antoine de la Sale, was composed at the request of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, around 1462, by a court writer, perhaps Philippe Pot. Several Burgundian lords, for their own amusement, take turns telling bawdy stories, full of revelry, amorous contests, feints, and wordplay, which form a sequel to Boccaccio's Decameron and foreshadow the tales of the 16th century. Yet, behind the apparent gaiety, one senses the anxieties of a century ending badly: chivalric loyalty has disappeared, filial love, marriage, even friendship are affected by the decline of morals and the rise of falsehood. The original text was adapted, compiled, and reworked several times in the 16th century" (Bechtel, "Catalogue des gothiques français", 545, N-78). Condition: The fine 17th century binding is in very good condition with only minor rubbing to the joints and extremities; leaves with some damp-staining, most visible in the margins but occasionally affecting the text area; 4 pages with heavier ink staining. 4 leaves with restorations: One of the leaves with a restored missing corner fragment; another leaf with a replaced missing part (with some loss to text and 1 woodcut), the last text leaf with small marginal replacement (with minor loss of text), the last leaf with the full page woodcut mounted and with remargined loss to outer margin (without text loss) This edition is very rare; the Universal Short Title Catalogue (USTC 21915) records only 2 other copies in institutional holdings worldwide, located at the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the British Library. --- "It is a masterpiece of style; and the first work in prose, without question, in which the French language shows that clarity and easy elegance which made it the language of civilized Europe" (Viollet-le-Duc, "Bibliographie des chansons, fabliaux, contes en vers et en prose", 1859, p. 144). Provenence: Handwritten ownership note from the 19th century on the front flyleaf: "G. Schlatter". // Bibliography: Rés. Y2 730, G 10501; Viollet-le-Duc, p. 144; Bechtel N-78). // Wir, das Antiquariat Steffen Völkel, kaufen und verkaufen alte Bücher, Handschriften, Zeichnungen, Autographen, Grafiken und Fotografien. Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Moses van Uyttenbroeck (attr.) (illustrator). 2nd Edition. Avec sa préparation & son usage, pour le plus part des indispositions du corps humain, ensemble les diverses façons de le falsifier, & les marques pour le recognoistrè: Composé premierement en Latin par Iean Neander, Médecin à Leyden (.). Pp. [1] f.e., [8], 342, [2], [1] r.e.; 9 total engraved plates of which [7] outside the numeration and 2 within it. Woodcut ornament on the title page, woodcut initials and decorations. Rebacked in old full parchment with (discolored) title at the spine; endpapers renewed in modern times. A slight peculiarity is perceptible in the frontispiece?s impression and paper, though not in a way that allows any firm conclusion. While a restoration or an anastatic replacement on old paper cannot be ruled out, there is no definite evidence for it. Consultations with a few colleagues did not yield agreement. Regardless, the volume is overall uniform and attractive, with charming fresh plates. Reference: Graesse IV, 652; Waring II, 709; Ferchl 379; Leclerc, Bibliotheca Americana , 407; Sabine XII, 576. Tobacco as a miracle herb, with images of Native American traditional knowledge, Persian pipes recorded in a Western book for the first time, and botanical beauties. Second emission of the first French translation by Jacques Veyras (the first emission was issued only a few months before, in October 1625, and it is extremely rare, being its most recent sale recorded on Rare Book Hub from 1977). The first absolute Latin edition was printed in 1622 and it is apparently less pursued than the French one(s). The book presents a study of tobacco and its medicinal applications, firmly rejecting its use only for mere pleasure and insisting on its medical benefits. Its illustrative content, consisting of nine plates in total, features botanical plates, extremely rare images of Native Americans cultivating and curing tobacco, alongside some of the first depictions of long pipes and the Persian kalian (basically a hookah, or shisha, or narghile).
