L.R.C.P. specialist in venereal disease and practicing at the Cape in the 1950s and 60s. Janet Doe writes of this volume and its author: "[H]is first major publicationone of the reasons for his coming to Parisappeared, the De morbis venereis and it was an immediate success. In spite of his confusing syphilis and gonorrheaas did everyone else for another hundred years he did clear the field of much of the charlatanism and ignorance which had existed previously, and his history of syphilis, the result of long and painstaking research, was a prodigy of wide reading and reasoning. Together with a short Abstract of the Lives of the Authors who have wrote on those Diseases, and a List of their Works'. xiv+(18, Advertisement and contents)+404+338 (no ills but 11 Chinese characters pp.284-5 Vol.2); front pastedown has ex-libris plate of Robert Mowbray ('Member of the National Book League'), No major internal faults, some creasing to endpapers and front blank fly, endpapers have some browing to edges offset from facing binding, top edge inevitably dust darkened. Binding firm and undamaged but rubbing to edges and in a few places to boards, light panelled spine has good gilt-on-red label, rubbed to top and joints, esp.front joint, with some surface ageing. Very scarce. Size: 22 cms x 27 Cms.
