More than 1.7 million copies have been sold, thanks to its universal message of aging as a natural gift of life. Winner of the American Booksellers Book of the Year Honors Award (1991), and two Benjamin Franklin Awards: for design and content, literature (1988), and for excellence and innovation in marketing, literature (1992), When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple has been applauded for its honest and inspiring approach to the much neglected topic of aging. When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple has created a network of support and encouragement: the sixty-plus men and women whose work is included, the readers who have taken the time to share how the book has touched their lives, and the booksellers who have so graciously recommended it to buyers. Stories and poems such as Warning, Like Mother, Like Daughter, Love at Fifty, Near Places, Far Places, and Dear Paul Newman tell of the endearing moments of joy -- and passion -- to be found in the rich and varied world of midlife and beyond. This award-winning anthology has earned a word-of-mouth popularity because, as the Los Angeles Times said, the time is ripe for such a message. ; Contents: Warning / Jenny Joseph -- Sitty Victory / Vicky Salloum -- Grandma sits down / Rick Kempa -- Aunt Marie at 99 / Tom Benediktsson -- Here, take my words / Karen Brodine -- The trouble was meals / Elizabeth Bennett -- Like mother, like daughter / Susan S. Softcover. Zustand: gut. 1967. I bought this old used book after seeing it on a fb page where they showed the cover and 1 potato cake recipe. When we opened it and saw all the stars and rockers of the 60's with pictures of them with their recipes including a little story for each one, wow, it took me back to my flower power lovechild days of yore. If you're a baby boomer and you can find this book, buy it and enjoy. Thinking this weekend we are gonna make Davy Jones from The Monkees "Orange Kiss Me Cake" On a side note I love that on the inside of my cover it says "Merry Christmas Mary Beth & Jim Love, Mom 1967" Author Roberta Ashley was a teen columnist for "This Week" magazine who interviewed many celebrities. The intro says she asked many of them for favorite recipes to put together this book. Celebrities who contributed recipes include: The Rolling Stones, Omar Sharif, Jane Fonda, The Byrds, Leonard Nimoy, Larry Hagman, Barbra Streisand, Paul Revere, The Mamas and the Papas, Sally Field, Eva Marie Saint, Carol Lawrence, Dave Clark, Mike Nesmith, Sam the Sham, Jack Jones, Lesly Gore, Caroll Burnett, The Robbs, The Buckinghams, Noel Harrison, Paul Anka, The Cyrkle, Bobby Vinton, Donovan, Sonny and Cher, Herman's Hermits, Mickey Dolenz, Mike McCallum, Marlo Thomas, Keith Allison, The Yardbirds, Dwayne Hickman, Gary Lewis, Patti Page, Bobby Darin, Peaches and Herb, Bob Denver, Barbara Feldon, Peter Tork, Sybil Burton Christopher, Davy Jones, Chad Stuart, Soupy Sales, Liza Minelli, Petula Clark, Mark Lindsay, Simon and Garfunkel, Dr West's Medicine Show and Junk Band, Smokey and His Sister, The Supremes and Don Adams I bought this cookbook with my allowance money, at age 13. The family had great fun, making Herman's a Hermits toad-in-the-hole, Paul Revere's chili, and a Monkee Meal, with Mike Nesmith's stroganoff, Peter Tork's Mad Mandarin Salad, and Davy Jones's Kiss Me Cake. All the recipes are easy enough for teens to cook for their parents, unaided, and would probably have been appreciated by college students, off on their own. My sister just today sent me my battered, taped together book. I might make Gary Lewis's Tuna Treat for dinner.
