Engraved pictorial title, engraved "Liste des Caracteres" and 23 very fine engraved plates depicting French and Italian actors (many with original tissue guards), each interleaved with contemporary manuscript descriptions, bound in. A note on the front pastedown gives the writer as " Mlle. Langland de Lille"(?) Ink collector's/seller's stamp to verso ffep. Holland House bookplate also to pastedown, with usual crayon markings to bookplate. (An early Jacobean country house in Kensington, known as the Whig social epicentre of the early 19th century). During his visit to Paris in 1765, David Garrick was presented with a collection of miniature portraits by Faesch of actors at the Comedie-Francaise. The artist pursued the connection, arriving in London in May 1768 with an introduction to England's greatest actor and within two years saw the first series of his theatrical portrait engravings published by Sayer. He went on to portray many actors and actresses of the Comedie-Francaise and Comedie-Italienne in Paris and Drury Lane Theatre in London. Mlle. Langlard, a member of the prominent Lenglart textile and merchantile dynasty, compiled and wrote detailed biographical, critical and dramatic notes for each of the plates. Sometime during the 19th century the volume was acquired by Holland House, most probably as a study volume for its unique commentary on French dramatic history, Lord and Lady Holland running the most famous Francophile and literary salon at that time. Thereafter, when the library was dispersed, the volume went through the hands of an unidentified dealer. Four items loosely inserted in a 33 x 25.5 cm black paper folder which is in good condition, with light signs of wear. With 26.5 x 20.5 illustrated label on cover, printed in black and brown, for 'The Colophon | A book collector's quarterly'. Presented to the guests at a 'Colophon' dinner (perhaps the inaugural one in 1929?). The contents as follows. ONE: Leaf from the Cologne Chronicle, 1499. The dimensions of the leaf from this incunabulum are roughly 30.5 x 20.5 cm. In fair condition, on aged paper with light damp staining. With three woodcuts, each roughly 5 x 4 cm. The first, on the recto, depicting a pope, the other two, the same as one another, depicting a bearded king. Recto headed with subtitle: 'Soter van Campanien pays | Gheyn Bisschoff tzo Coellen', and with 'lxv' (pagination?) in top right-hand corner. Last subtitle on veso: 'Helius der hartneckich wart der roi'. TWO: Notice by 'The Colophon', nicely printed in red and black, on one side of 32.5 x 25 cm wove paper. With two facsimile illustrations from the Cologne Chronicle. Discussing the background of the leaf 'which is inserted in this folder', and containing the following in red: 'The Colophon is glad to express here its gratitude to Dr. A. S. W. Tischbein discusses a painting which Frauenhold had sent him, and writes about the publication of his works on Red-figure vase painting: "Ich danke Ihnen für Ihren so freundlichen Brief, der so voll von Sachen ist die ich wünsche. Die Auslegung von der überschikten Zeichnung ist sehr gelehrt. ich kann aber nicht entscheiden in wie weit Sie recht haben. Das Mädgen hatt abgeschnittene Hare. und komt sehr selden auf Vasen vor, nur auf historischen Vorstellungen. Das was sie in der Handt hatt, gleicht an einen Braden Spieß von unser Zeit.
