Vintage photograph from 1945. Featuring baron and film magnate J. Arthur Rank seated on a stool with a shotgun, his gamekeeper visible in the foreground. Tipped-on mimeograph description, plus rubber stamps for the photographer and Eagle-Lion Distribution to the verso. Son of a wealthy industrial flour milliner, J. Arthur Rank entered the film industry when calls for films upholding British values, as opposed to those of their American film counterparts, spurred him to create a production company of his own. His Methodist beliefs guided his company, the General Cinema Finance Corporation, and would remain a cornerstone of his fast-growing cinema empire. In part because of Rank's efforts, the 1940s represented a golden age of British cinema, as can be seen by 1946 box office, when for the first and only time British films did better at the domestic box office than American ones. His legacy as a producer includes works like Laurence Olivier's 1944 film "Henry V," and Gabriel Pascal's 1945 "Caesar and Cleopatra" starring Vivien Leigh. As this photograph would suggest, though the baron was highly involved in the work of his cinema and film studio empire, he retained a strong interest in breeding smooth-coated black Labrador retrievers, and using them during his hobbyist hunting. Brustbild von vorn. --Mit dem Architekten Charles Boot errichtete er auf dem Anwesen Heatherden Hall die Pinewood Studios, deren Leitung er übernahm, zudem wurde er Ende der 1930er Jahre auch Leiter von Alexander Kordas Denham Film Studios. In den 1940er Jahren war er der bedeutendste Filmproduzent Großbritanniens, für den Regisseure wie Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger, David Lean und Carol Reed arbeiteten. Nachdem er in den 1940er Jahren knapp einem Bankrott entgangen war, musste Rank die Pinewood und Denham Studios abgeben. Seine Rank Organisation, verlegte sich aber auf die Rundfunkproduktion, daneben den Betrieb von Hotels und Ballsälen, den Immobilienhandel und gemeinsam mit der Xerox Corporation die Produktion und den Vertrieb von Kopiergeräten in Europa, Afrika und Asien. Von 1952 bis 1969 leitete Rank das Familienunternehmen Ranks Hovis McDougall, Ltd., daneben widmete er sich karitativen Tätigkeiten. 1953 gründete er mit seiner Frau die J. Arthur Rank Group Charity (heute: The Rank Foundation).…
