(The author had done a stint in Hollywood himself, and of course was also the one-time husband of Lillian Hellman.) Each story includes its own brief "afterword," in which the author relates the events of the story to some bit of show-business lore, or to his own experience. The stories are largely told in Benny's voice, and the titles alone are worth the price of admission: "It's Enough to Curl Your Blood"; "I'm the Dog Evveybody Is Talkin' It Shouldn't Happen To"; "I Got Hard Luck Hooverin' Over Me Like a Flock of Vouchers"; etc.

(price-clipped) [book is only modestly shelfworn, but there's considerable age-toning to the edges of the text block due to cheap paper used; the jacket is quite nice despite some browning and light scuffing to the spine]. (pen and ink drawings) A collection of humorous, Bronx-Jewish-ethnic short stories in a vein that Kober had been mining since the late 1920s. (The term "schtick" comes to mind.) As with his earlier works, most of these (all but two) had originally been published in The New Yorker. This volume contains nineteen stories, six of which, presented under the subtitle "The Hollywood Flesh-Peddler," are further adventures of agent Benny Greenspan, the central figure in Kober's 1946 book "That Man is Here Again.".
