Full calf, G+. 2 volumes, [xii]+lvi+239pp, [viii]+339pp, [ in vol II pagination jumps at 306 to 309 but the text is complete ], b/w engraved frontis to each volume, grand total of 16 engraved plates, armorial bookplate of the Baring family over an earlier bookplate of James Drummond, upper board to volume I detached, marginal worming to both volumes occasional affecting the text or plate edge but with the meaning legible from the context, occasional burn mark & smudges, leather rubbed & worn with some loss to the corners & edges. The forth edition of this much reprinted edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses which had first appeared in 1717 & was editied by Garth, with Dryden the providing much of the translating. It was to become the standard text of Ovid's Magnum Opus in English. The plates consist of a portrait of Queen Caroline, consort of King George II ( as the dedicatee ) plus 15 plates showing scenes from the poems each dedicated to a different English noblewoman. a different English noblewoman.
