Vintage studio still photograph from the 1958 film, a publicity portrait of actress Dorothy Malone in a sequined leotard with a floral embellishment at one leg. A dramatization of the sordid life of Diana Barrymore, based on her 1957 autobiography, about her failed Hollywood career and descent into alcoholism (following in her father John's footsteps). An attempt to capitalize on the success of "The Bad and the Beautiful" (1952), which had also portrayed a fictionalized version of Barrymore through Lana Turner's character Georgia Lorrison. Inscription reads For Rachel Ira & Beatrice Freeman. {Ira died in 1997, before the publication of his final novel. DJ is in a plastic sleeve. Ira Henry Freeman was a former reporter for The New York Times who wrote frequently about his travels after his retirement in 1961. He was a native of New York City, and graduated from the Columbia School of Journalism in 1928, before working for the Brooklyn-Queens section of The Times. He later worked in rewrite and as a general assignment reporter for The Times, covering state and city agencies among other things. He also wrote features, both serious and humorous, for The New York Times Magazine. During World War II, while assigned to Yank, the weekly Army magazine, he reported from Europe on the Allied advance. In 1950, he won a Polk Award for national reporting for a series on people being displaced by construction of a nuclear bomb plant in South Carolina. From his experiences as a reporter, he wrote ''Out of the Burning: The Story of a Boy Gang Leader'' (Crown, 1960). The next year, he retired and continued to write short stories and magazine articles His novel, A Noisy Desperation, was highly regarded. He also contributed regularly to the Travel section of The Times. His final article for The Times, published June, 1997 came from the red-rock world of Sedona in the Verde Valley of Arizona. In the course of his narrative, Mr. Freeman surrounds his hero with robust characters and sets his experiences in diverse, sharply observed backgrounds. Freemans' portrayal of the staff and events in the city room and private sanctums of a great urban newspaper were undoubtedly informed by his years with The New York Times. The reader shares the hero's emotions as he lies inside a bomber dropping its deadly cargo on a German city. The hero's appearance before a Senate Unamerican Activities committee is not only 'nightmarishly vivid," it has a melodramatic denouement. By the tae's end the hero concludes that despite all his "disgruntlements" and though not yet exactly 'gruntled', he has had more bellylaughs than bellyaches.
