Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 165 Pp Grey Bopards Printed In Black And Rust. Light Wear, No Fraying Or Tears, Slight Browning To Spine. Inscribed By Thge Author To Artist Jan Stussy "To A Fine Artist- Jan Stussy / Thought You Might Like To Know That Besides Writing Books On Picasso, I Also Write Songs Singing The Praises Of The Artistic Talents Of Arthur Millier. I Don't Even Hesitate In Using Good Old Art's Name Alongside Of Macdonald Wright's In The Same Breath- A Flexible Fellow I. Hope You Enjoy My Book, Thoughtfully, Lou. P. S. I Also Stomp Out Grass Fires. (Apply For Rates)." Jan Stussy (1922-1990) Was A Multifaceted Craftsman Who Worked In Paint, Silk-Screening And Film. The Documentary "Gravity Is My Enemy," Co-Produced With John Joseph, Won A 1977 Academy Award. It Was Based On The Life Of Quadriplegic Artist Mark Hicks, And Its Production Involved Both The Ucla Art And Theater Arts Departments. It Also Earned Four Other National And International Awards. Stussy Was An Experimenter Whose Imagination Led Him Into Psychedelic Nudes, To Disfigured Mannequins, To Watercolors And To Interchangeable Mural Panels That He Moved About In His Home For Varied Effects. He Once Mixed Coffee Grounds With His Paints For Purposes Of Texture And Often Used Building Materials Instead Of Canvases. He Created More Than 5,000 Paintings, Sculptures And Prints And They Hang In 130 Private Collections Around The World And In Museums Ranging From The Smithsonian Institute And National Gallery Of Art In Washington, To Israel, To Municipal Showplaces In Virginia And California. His Ingenuity Sometimes Brought Him Into Conflict With Art Critics. The Times' Henry Seldis, While Expressing His Appreciation For Stussy's Diverse Talents, Wrote In 1967 That He Hoped The Artist Would Not Want To Be Remembered Solely As "A Clever Showman." Stussy Began Teaching At Ucla In 1947 At The Old Moore Hall Building. He Also Taught Extension Classes From 1957 To 1980, Helping To Develop That Program Into One Of Mass Appeal For Adults. In 1979 He Was Voted The "Outstanding Teacher Award In The Visual Arts, Ucla Extension.". Inscribed by Author(s).

They were just what she needed for her own garden, and she asked her host what they were. "Those are Nellie Stevens hollies," was the reply. She looked again and couldn't help but wonder about the name. Who in the world is Nellie Stevens, and how did her name ever become associated with this plant? She noted other intriguing names, and she asked similar questions. She saw a beautifulblue clematis and wondered if Betty Corning was still alive and what stories she had to tell. She wondered about the places and people whose names are associated with so many popular garden plants. She is not alone. If necessity is the mother of invention, curiosity is the mother of research. In many cases, we wonder not what our gardens grow, but who our gardens grow. Until now, these accounts have not been compiled and unfortunately, many of the people are disappearing, their stories with them. Now gardeners can enjoy the beauty of their plants and delight in the tales they tell." ; Contents: Anna, Illinois -- Arnold Arboretum -- Janes Bath -- Lole Benedict -- ray Bracken -- Luther Burbank -- Molly Bush -- Cedar lane Farm -- John Champneys, Phillippe Noisette -- Corbett, maryland -- Betty Corning -- John Creech -- Roy Davidson -- Vince and Barbara Dooley -- Eco-Gardens -- Katie Ferguson -- Henry and Sally Fuller -- Fred Galle -- Gardenview Horticultural park -- Azilda Gerbing -- Goodness Grows -- Kim Hawks -- mary Gibson Henry -- Poly Hill -- Andre Iseli -- Tina James -- Joseph Kassab -- Hella Lacy -- Michael Lindsey -- Carol Mackie -- Frank N Meyer -- Montrose Nursery -- David Mooberry -- Mt.
