Among the nutritional factors related to neural tube defects, in addition to Folate, low level of serum zinc has been described by many authors in the recent time. This study was conducted with the objective of finding the relationship of serum zinc with NTD in a Bangladeshi population. This case control study was conducted between in BSMMU, Dhaka. Newborns with neural tube defects and their mothers were considered as cases and normal babies and their mothers were taken as controls. Mothers taking zinc supplements in any part of pregnancy were excluded from the study. Venous blood specimens from mothers and newborns were obtained at or within one week of delivery. Serum zinc concentration was determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. Low level of serum zinc in the mothers and newborns were found to be associated with neural tube defects, which is consistent with some other studies. However, it is also evident that some other factors (maternal parity etc) could significantly be associated with this defect. La concentración de zinc en suero se determinó mediante espectrofotometría de absorción atómica. Se encontró que el bajo nivel de zinc sérico en las madres y los recién nacidos se asociaba con defectos del tubo neural, lo que es consistente con algunos otros estudios. Onder de voedingsfactoren die verband houden met neurale buisdefecten is, naast foliumzuur, de afgelopen tijd door veel auteurs een laag serumzinkgehalte beschreven. Deze studie werd uitgevoerd met als doel de relatie tussen serumzink en NTD te vinden in een Bengaalse bevolking. Deze case-control studie werd uitgevoerd tussen in BSMMU, Dhaka. Pasgeborenen met neurale buisdefecten en hun moeders werden als gevallen beschouwd en normale baby's en hun moeders werden als controles beschouwd. Moeders die zinksupplementen gebruikten tijdens een deel van de zwangerschap, werden uitgesloten van het onderzoek. Veneuze bloedmonsters van moeders en pasgeborenen werden op of binnen een week na de bevalling verkregen. De serumzinkconcentratie werd bepaald door middel van atoomabsorptiespectrofotometrie. Een laag serumzinkgehalte bij moeders en pasgeborenen bleek geassocieerd te zijn met neurale buisdefecten, wat consistent is met enkele andere onderzoeken. Het is echter ook duidelijk dat sommige andere factoren (moederlijke pariteit enz.) Significant met dit defect kunnen worden geassocieerd.
