Pamphlet. Zustand: Good. Octavo, 8" x 5." pp. 52, includes half-title (Mr. Appleton's DISCOURSES Occasioned by the Decease of the Rev. President Holyoke") Removed from a book of pamphlets. Leather remnants on spine. Spine fragile. Stippled blue edges neatly trimmed. Very worn, old repair reattaching first and last leaf. Small open tear to inner margin of half-title. Signature of Harvard treasurer Thomas Hubbard to top right corner of half-title (partly shaved). Small damp stain to top right corner of half-title and title-page. Interior pages clean, lightly tanned with minimal foxing. Funeral sermon celebrating the life of Harvard's ninth president, Edward Holyoke (1689-1769). During Holyoke's tenure of 32 years, he witnessed the Great Awakening and rumblings of Revolutionary sentiment. Holyoke espoused liberal ideals and advocated for religious tolerance. A note on this copy: Evans and Sabin's collate pp. 52. ESTC collates 52, [2], 8. This copy does not have [2], 8 mentioned in the ESTC. (ESTC W37640) (Evans, 11161) (Sabin, 1844). Pamphlet bears a previous owner's inscription to top right of the cover, with period-abbreviated signature of Thomas Hubbard, Though at least one line has been trimmed (leaving only a remnant of that line), two brief lines remain which to the best of this cataloguer's ability, seem to read: ".his most humble.(prob. "servant"), Tho. Hubbard. It is not unreasonable to posit that at this funeral for Edward Holyoke, who had served as President of Harvard College for 32 years, that this Thomas Hubbard is one and the same as Thomas Hubbard (1702-1773), Boston merchant, speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives between the years 1750 and 1759, Deacon of The Old South Church, justice of the peace, Commissary General of the Province of the Massachusetts Bay, and Treasurer of Harvard from 1752 to 1773.".
