Eigentlich hat Homer Idlewilde kein Grund zur Klage. Denn Bier und Pfannekuchen gibt es genug in der kleinen Stadt Farrango in Kalifornien, in der er seine beschauliche und wohl behütete Heimat hat. Und genug Menschen, mit denen er skurrile philosophische Gespräche führen kann, gibt es auch. Und dann ist da noch das Bordell mit Ophelia, in deren Armen er am liebsten eines Tages sterben würde. Für Ophelia würde er sogar sein süßes Nichtstun aufgeben und sich als Förster in die Idylle der Gemeinschaft integrieren. Als dann plötzlich eine Sternschnuppe am Himmel auftaucht, ergibt sich die Gelegenheit, den Wunsch zu einem bedeutungsvolleren Leben in Erfüllung gehen zu lassen. Von nun an verändert sich Idlewildes Leben nachdrücklich und er schlittert in eine wahre Odyssee bemerkenswerter Abenteuer, von denen die Begegnung mit Umweltverschmutzern, bei der Homer nur mit einer Radkappe ?bekleidet? auftritt, noch die unspektakulärste ist. Der mit dem Prix Goncourt des Lycéens ausgezeichnete Roman Das zufällige Leben des Homer Idlewilde des 33-jährigen französisch-amerikanischen Autors Yann Apperry ist ein wundervolles Buch, das auf poetische Art und Weise sehr viel vom Leben selbst erzählt. Und es ist selbst das Ergebnis einer Geschichte, die nur das Leben schreiben kann. Denn Apperry wollte nach dem Erfolg seines Debüts Diabolus in musica aufhören mit der Schriftstellerei und vagabundierte auf der Flucht vor der Presse lieber zwei Jahre quer durch die USA. Dass es dann doch anders kam, ist ein Glück für alle Leser.
