    Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Anton Chekhov - was probably the most beloved Russian writer after Leo Tolstoi in Japan. His prose resonated with the beauty of the late Meiji era. He became one of the favorite writers of Japanese literature elite, such as Natsume Soseki and Akutagawa Runosuke. The present book is a beginning of the the second wave of his popularity and is the first published translation prepared by Hirotsu Kazuo (1891-1968), who`s graduation thesis in Waseda University was dedicated to Chekov. The preface text is an important article The power of Chekhov by the translator. Following the established popularity of Chekhov the publishing house arranged elegant decoration for this pocket size book. Hisui Sugiura (1876-1965) was a pioneer of Japanese graphic design and dandy. The content includes: Kiss, La Cigale, Sleepy head, Van`ka, Oysters, Incident, Tobacco, August night, Ward No.6. No copies in OCLC. Only one library. Only the Museum of Modern Japanese Literature has a copy. Very rare. Text in Japanese. Original paperboard hard cover. Colourful decoration. End paper decoration with colour wood block printed paper. Missing original slip case. Very minor stains on the cover and end-paper. Top edge guilt. Ex-ownership stamps on the title pages. Occasional browning on the content. Chipped spine. Soiled cover. Otherwise very good to near fine condition. 15,9 x 10,7 cm. 19+1+354 p.
