Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,3, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, language: English, abstract: The international aesthetic movement at the turn of the century is the so-called 'Modern Break' or the period of literary modernism. A famous author of this movement can be found in Elias Canetti who 'depicts himself as a lone traveler' (Murphy 21) and who was geographically displaced from his home in Austria while spending a significant part of his life either living or travelling through Western Europe. His first novel is 'Auto Da Fé', which was published in 1936. 'Auto Da Fé' contains a number of dreams which the Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud interpreted and analyzed in his 'Interpretation of Dreams' in 1899. Consequently, this essay will demonstrate in how far Freud's concept of psychoanalysis can be defined and which features are commonly associated with it according to Canetti and Freud. To prove this statement, the following essay initially gives a short overview of the Freudian concept of psychoanalysis and identifies its common features. Moreover, the second part of the essay will analyze and interpret Peter Kien's dreams in Elias Canetti's 'Auto Da Fé' with regard to psychoanalysis. The third and last part will finally sum up all the important points mentioned in this paper.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, language: English, abstract: 'In response to the industrial revolution of the late 18th century' (Scheese 6) a new field of literary studies has been established. Derived from former pastoralism, authors now engage into what is called 'nature writing'. Addressing the concerns of life in the country, attention is directed to the different forms of nature as well. One of these nature writers can be found in Mary Hunter Austin, an American writer who expresses her 'affinity for nature, and more particularly the desert' (Scheese 76) by describing the landscape of the Mojave Desert in Southern California the way she perceived it during her walks through it. Austin successfully creates a whole new picture of it in her work 'The Land of Little Rain'. Through her celebration of a land often perceived as sterile and uninteresting, Austin helped create in America what had not existed before the turn of the century: a desert aesthetic. What Scheese here calls 'a desert aesthetic' (Scheese 75) describes the establishment of a literary discourse exclusively centered around literature about the desert. Desert literature itself offers numerous possibilities for writers at the beginning of the twentieth century, especially for female writers as it 'inspired cultural fantasies and enabled real and imagined experiences of solitude, comntemplative repose, divine revelation' (Gersdorf 16). As a consequence, the stories of female writers can be understood as symbolic since the action is moved from a former domestic space to the public sphere in form of the desert. This also conforms to the character of the concept of 'New Womanhood' which signifies a newly gained freedom for women at the end of the nineteenth century as their determination of staying within the domestic sphere was finally abandoned. To prove this statement, the following essay initially gives a short overview of the literary study of nature writing and its more recent descendant, namely 'desert literature'. Moreover, the second part of the essay will show how Mary Hunter Austin succeeds in transferring her appreciation of the desert intoher short story collection 'The Land of Little Rain', where she attributes utopian qualities to the theme of the desert. The third part will finally analyze Austin's novel with regard to her gender, her concern for nature and the developments concerning the ecofeminist movement at the beginning of thetwentieth century.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject American Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, language: English, abstract: One serial example focusing on ethnic inquiry is presented by the episode 'Seeing Red' of the mystery detective series The Mentalist. The series was created by British writer and producer Bruno Heller and it first aired in 2008. It tells the story of Patrick Jane. Having worked as a clairvoyant in his past, he attracted the attention of the serial killer Red John. After this killer murdered Jane's family, he starts to work as a consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in order to find Red John and to perform his revenge. In the course of his work for this agency, he helps the team solve various other crimes until he finally finds Red John. Even though this episode might at first sight be simply overlooked as another prime time crime series, a critical analysis of the production reveals its complex structure. This structure consists of interwoven social and ethnic relations that are delineated in various ways. Especially, great emphasis is put on Asianness, Irishness, and Whiteness and the way these ethnic groups socially interact with each other. Thus, this paper aims at exploring the filmic deployment of Whiteness and Otherness in specific contexts. The central hypothesis discussed in this paper is that although at first glance, the conception of 'Seeing Red' seems to propagate multicultural postracial ideals of contemporary US American TV-series, it secretly serves to perpetuate the legacy of the superiority of the WASP.In order to serve this purpose, the paper will first take a closer look at the way ethnicity is depicted in 'Seeing Red'. In the center of attention are Irishness, Asianness, and Whiteness and how they are portrayed in this episode of The Mentalist. The second part of the paper will then demonstrate to what extent the employment of stereotypes in 'Seeing Red' serves to perpetuate and reproduce WASP-related structures. To encode the underlying racial notions that advocate white supremacist standards, the chore cast of this episode is analyzed from a critical point of view. Lastly, the paper concludes by summarizing the main findings and giving a brief outlook on points of inquiry for future research projects in this specific context.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Spirit mediums of East Africa. Healers and fishermen of the Amazon River Basin. Potters of the American Southwest. People contending with climate change long ago. All share 'knowledge in motion,' a process of drawing on experiences past and present while engaging in daily practice in relation to contexts of time, place, and power. In the last twenty-five years, scholars from a number of disciplines have explored 'situated learning,' specifically investigating how learning relates to social reproduction and daily life. In Knowledge in Motion, contributors focus on learning through time and at a variety of scales, particularly as they relate to power and politics, with implications for emergent communities and constellations of practice. This volume brings together archaeologists, historians, and cultural anthropologists to examine communities engaged in a range of learning practices around the globe, from Africa to the Americas. Contributors draw on the growing interdisciplinary scholarship on situated learning to explore those processes in relation to power and broader forces that shape knowledge during times of turbulent change. Enriching the diversity of regions and disciplines, Knowledge in Motion focuses on how learning, knowledge transmission, and the emergent qualities of communities and constellations of practice are shaped by changing spheres of interaction or other unstable events and influences. The contributions forge productive theories and methodologies for exploring situated learning and its broad-ranging outcomes.…
