Rilegato. Zustand: molto buono. 2 voll. in un tomo in-8°, pp. VIII, 384; (4), 321, (3); legatura coeva piena pelle con filetti e decori in oro al dorso. Tagli rossi, vignette incise ai frontespizi. Alcune figg. xilografiche intercalate n.t. Testatine e culs-de-lampe ornati. Qualche usuale brunitura. Bell'esemplare. Cfr. (altre edizioni): British Museum Catalogue, vol. XIII, col. 233. Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Philidor, A. D. (François-André Danican Philidor, 1726 -1795): Studies of Chess - Containing a Systematic Introduction to the Game, and the Analysis of Chess. London, 1817. Samuel Bagster. 1 plate (engraved with copper, chessboard) XXXII. 428 p. (with a portrait of Philidor on the copper-engraved illustrated title page, within the pagination), with a few engraved chess diagrams. Fifth edition. In a later modern full cloth binding. Library shelfmark and library label on the endpaper: formerly belonging to the collection of the Bath Municipal Reference Library (England), withdrawn from the collection. Stronger foxing on the copper-engraved plate and the title page, with occasional minor foxing spots on some pages. Philidor's original work, L'Analyse des échecs (Analysis of Chess), was first published in 1749 and revolutionized the game. He was the first to recognize and describe the strategic importance of pawns. The famous saying "Pawns are the soul of chess" (Les pions sont l'âme des échecs) originates from him. Before Philidor, players focused mainly on swift attacks by the pieces, but he demonstrated that a proper pawn structure determines the success of both attack and defense. This volume is an expanded, posthumously published English-language collection of his teachings. ( O,O ) /)__) , .…

Third edition in English: the original French text was first published in 1749, and is considered the most important book in all chess literature. A.D. Philidor (1726-95) was the most brilliant player of his age, but he was also a talented musician and a leading composer of opéras comiques.…

With inscription in ink on frontispiece. 21 coloured plates printed in red, green and black. One woodcut illustration of chess pieces. In latter marbled hard paper with green gilt title label on spine. Original woodcut illustrated wrappers bound into. (5), 4150, (2), 1 frontispiece portrait of Philidor and 21 plates of illustrations; and one leaf and 8 pages of book advertisement. Later edition of Philidor's (François-André Danican Philidor; 17261795) famous book on chess, that was published first in 1749. Philidor was regarded as the best chess player of his age. Published undated. An edition with the same colophon exists, it is dated to 1821. This is a later edition, still Goodspeed considered it as one of the earliest American books on chess, however some bibliographies assume that it was printed in Belgium. We found an identical edition at The Netherlands in the collection of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, they dated it to 1850, but most likely erroneously, as this copy has a dated handwritten dedication on January, 1844. There is one thing that all our sources agree, that this one is a scarce and rather interesting edition. The book advertisements at the rear are related to the publishing houses Delarue in Paris and Blocquel-Castiaux in Lille, that firms the European origin of the book. Couverture rigide. Zustand: Bon. Michel-Jean Sedaine & François-André Danican Philidor, Blaise le Savetier, opéra-comique. Liège, F.-J. Desoer, [1759-1760]. In-8, 151-[1]p.
