Germanicus Caesar's translation of Aratus's celebrated astronomical poem, Phaenomena, is crucial for the study of the poetics of Latin translation. Building on the foundation of translation studies, Translating the Heavens investigates how Germanicus rewrote the Phaenomena as an Augustan aetiological poem that subverts the religious and philosophical themes of the original. About the author: Germanicus Julius Caesar (24 May 16 B.C. or 15 B.C. 10 October A.D. 19) was a member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty of the early Roman Empire. He was born in Lugdunum, Gaul (modern Lyon). At birth he was named either Nero Claudius Drusus after his father or Tiberius Claudius Nero after his uncle. He received the agnomen Germanicus, by which he is principally known, in 9 BC, when it was posthumously awarded to his father in honour of his victories in Germania. Germanicus was the grandson-in-law and great-nephew of the Emperor Augustus, nephew and adoptive son of the Emperor Tiberius, father of the Emperor Caligula, brother of the Emperor Claudius, and the maternal grandfather of the Emperor Nero. …

Le manuel d'initiation à l'astronomie, mêlant connaissances physiques et légendes stellaires, fut un genre abondamment développé dans l'Antiquité. Ce traité en est sans doute un des meilleurs témoignages : on y trouve tout à la fois l'histoire de Callisto métamorphosée en Grande Ourse ou de Ganymède devenu le Verseau, que les théories, aussi pointues que fascinantes, de la musique des sphères. Si ce traité connut, d'Ovide à Boccace, une étonnante fortune, son auteur lui, est tombé dans l'oubli, si bien qu'on attribue, mais sans grande certitude, le texte à Hygin, le bibliothécaire d'Auguste et ami d'Ovide. Cette édition fait le point des connaissances et des hypothèses sur l'auteur du De Astronomia et analyse, de manière très détaillée, les différentes influences, philosophiques, littéraires ou mathématiques, sensibles dans ce texte. Des pistes de lecture sont aussi suggérées. La tradition manuscrite, des plus complexes pour ce texte dont nous avons plus de 70 manuscrits, est relatée de manière synthétique et illustrée par un stemma. Des notes viennent éclairer les allusions mythologiques, et complètent le texte. L'ouvrage est en outre enrichi par de nombreux index, par des figures et une carte de la voûte céleste.
