In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. xv, [1], 255, [1] pages. Maps. Illustrations. Footnotes. Index. Foreword by Raymond A. Wheeler. Ex-library with library markings. Stamps on top edge. Cover has some wear and Sticker/soiling. This book is an excellent source of information about the building of the Ledo Road. Covered are facts about the…building of the Ledo Road, including the cost in dollars and more importantly, American lives. You will see numbers supporting the fact that the Ledo Road was quite an engineering accomplishment, made even more so by the fact that it was built in wartime in the battle zone of northern Burma. Joseph Warren Stilwell (March 19, 1883 - October 12, 1946) was a United States Army general who served in the China Burma India Theater during World War II. Although distrustful of his Allies, Stilwell showed himself to be a capable and daring tactician in the field but a lack of resources meant he was continually forced to improvise. He differed as to strategy, ground troops versus air power, with his subordinate, Claire Chennault, who had the ear of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. General George Marshall, the Army Chief of Staff, acknowledged he had given Stilwell "one of the most difficult" assignments of any theater commander. The Ledo Road was built during World War II so that the Western Allies could supply the Chinese as an alternative to the Burma Road (which had been cut by the Japanese in 1942). It passes through the Burmese towns of Shingbwiyang, Myitkyina and Bhamo in Kachin state. In the 19th century, British railway builders had surveyed the Pangsau Pass, which is 3,727 feet high on the India-Burma border, on the Patkai crest, above Nampong, Arunachal Pradesh. They concluded that a track could be pushed through to Burma and down the Hukawng Valley. Although the proposal was dropped, the British prospected the Patkai Range for a road from Assam into northern Burma. British engineers had surveyed the route for a road for the first 80 miles. After the British had been pushed back out of most of Burma by the Japanese, building this road became a priority for the United States. After Rangoon was captured by the Japanese and before the Ledo Road was finished, the majority of supplies to the Chinese were delivered via airlift over the eastern end of the Himalayan Mountains known as the Hump. After the war, the road fell into disuse. In 2010, the BBC reported, "Much of the road has been swallowed up by jungle." First Edition [stated], presumed first printing.

In den WarenkorbHardcover with Dust Jacket. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. First Edition, First Printing. Signed by the Author and also with an inscription by Brig. General John C. Arrowsmith. The bindings are tight and square. Text is clean; light, even age-toning. Moderate shelf handling wear. The Mylar protected dust…jacket has the price of $5.95 with edgewear, small losses at the top of the spine and upper rear corner. 9.25 inches tall; 255 pages with an index. Laid-in is a clipped magazine article about the Burma Road. An insightful examination of the construction of the Ledo Road during World War II. This route, connecting India to China through Burma's challenging terrain, was a significant engineering feat achieved under wartime conditions. Anders delves into the operational aspects of the road's construction, highlighting the strategic importance of this supply line in supporting Allied forces in the Pacific Theater. The book provides detailed accounts of the laborious efforts, leadership challenges, and collaborative endeavors that culminated in the road's completion. Beyond its focus on military strategy, The Ledo Road serves as a tribute to the resilience and sacrifices of both military personnel and civilians involved in this monumental project. It stands as a testament to human determination amidst the adversities of war. [Adapted from Reviews] Brigadier General John Caraway Arrowsmith (1894 1985) was a distinguished officer in the United States Army Corps of Engineers, renowned for his pivotal role in the construction of the Ledo Road during World War II.
