Also included: a letter from Captain FitzRoy regarding the Abrolhos Islands, and maps of North Africa, the Egyptian desert, British Guiana, the Maldives, the mouth of the Ganges river, New Zealand, the Virgin Islands, the Upper Nile, west Africa.…

Engraved case map of the world in 40 segments (26 ½ x 44 ¾ inches) mounted to original linen backing with promotional self-wrappers ("Stanford's Two-Shilling Series of Tourists Guides / New Maps and New Editions"), recording steam routes including travel times and underwater telegraph cables; map inserts of the Arctic and Antarctica (polar projection) in lower right and lower left quadrants. Condition: very good with original color in outline; small creasing in lower right corner and some isolated foxing. Edward Stanford, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, acquired the plates and stock of John Arrowsmith in 1874. Note some scattered annotations regarding the achievements of 19th century naval officers and explorers that Stanford added to the present map, including the mention of William Parry's (1790-1855) attempt on the North Pole from the northern shores of Spitsbergen in 1827 (recorded beyond the neatline of the present map).…

The boundaries of Lake Champlain and the Connecticut River set the state off from the surrounding land, which is left unlabeled to isolate and highlight its detail. Denotes towns, counties and topographical features, all in beautiful detail. The map is in good condition with original platemark visible. Drawn by Samuel Lewis and engraved by D. Fairman. The map is from John Conrad & Co.'s "A new and elegant general atlas". The atlas was the first collaboration between Aaron Arrowsmith of London and Samuel Lewis of Philadelphia. John Arrowsmith (1790-1873) was from a family of London based cartographers and publishers, and was a founding member of the Royal Geographical Society. Samuel Lewis (c. 1754-1822), who drew this map, was a prolific geographer based in Philadelphia. This is a fine example of his work.…
