In den WarenkorbFolding colour-lithograph map, 571 x 810 mm. In the original printed wrappers with publisher's advertisement to inner front cover. This satirical map of Europe at the beginning of the First World War shows Austria-Hungary at the centre, depicted as the tragic and buffoonish Pierrot character of European pantomime. While grasping… at the German eagle (which is clawing at a French bayonet), Austria watches in horror as the Russian bear lashes out at both of them, grabbing ankles and talons. A small dog (Serbia) grasps him by the coat. Great Britain and France are ready to attack the eagle: France is represented as "Marianne avec le Coq Galois", the emblems of the nation. Britain is represented as a domineering John Bull, his arms already bloodied from physical conflict. Armed with a sword, he steps across the Channel toward the conflict, backed by the armies of Ireland, India, New Foundland, and the ANZAC (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps): "Business as usual". In the south, Italy is depicted as an opera singer crooning "You made me love you, I didn't want to do it", the then-popular song composed by James V. Monaco with lyrics by Joseph McCarthy, introduced by Al Jolson in the 1913 Broadway revue "The Honeymoon Express". Italy later backed out of the Triple Alliance. The Ottoman Empire is pushed towards the conflict by German interests - unwillingly, it seems, as it sits on a barrel of gunpowder. The smaller neutral countries of Europe watch intently from a distance, cautiously and nervous, while the maelstrom of European affairs surrounds them. - Amschewitz (1882-1942) was a British-born artist who was unable to enlist for war service due to an injury he sustained while working on a mural project in Liverpool. Instead, Amschewitz focused on his interests in art and theatre, themes which are apparent in this map. - One large tear to the upper edge and two small tears to lower edge repaired. Wrappers worn, some edge flaws repaired with archival tape. - OCLC 557365249.

In den WarenkorbOriginal printed colours; signs of old folds, very small holes at some intersections of folds, laid on archivist tissue to strengthen, overall fine condition and retaining the original printed card wrapper which has been expertly detached. A satirical cartoon map of the European War, drawn by British-born, Jewish artist, J. M. A…mschewitz [1882-1942] and dated 1914. Published by "Geographia" Ltd, 55 Fleet Street, London. E.C. The Eagle in this case, is the German Eagle, wounded on one side by Marianne's (France) bayonet on one side and the mauling paw of the Russian bear on the other. Austria is portrayed by a prostrate pantomime clown or pierrot, with the head of an ass in one hand, surrounding foes appear to mount a sustained assault upon him. Across the Channel in England it is "Business as Usual", with a giant figure of John Bull, rolling up his sleeves and wearing a Union Flag waistcoat, accompanied by assorted Colonial troops.
