Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Here is an intriguing exploration of the ways in which the history of the Spanish Conquest has been misread and passed down to become popular knowledge of these events. The book offers a fresh account of the activities of the best-known conquistadors and explorers, including Columbus, Cortes, and Pizarro. Using a wide array of sources, historian Matthew Restall highlights seven key myths, uncovering the source of the inaccuracies and exploding the fallacies and misconceptions behind each myth. This vividly written and authoritative book shows, for instance, that native Americans did not take the conquistadors for gods and that small numbers of vastly outnumbered Spaniards did not bring down great empires with stunning rapidity. We discover that Columbus was correctly seen in his lifetimeand for decades afteras a briefly fortunate but unexceptional participant in efforts involving many southern Europeans. It was only much later that Columbus was portrayed as a great man who fought against the ignorance of his age to discover the new world. Restall also shows that the Spanish Conquest relied heavily on black and native allies, who provided many thousands of fighters, vastly outnumbering the conquistadors. In fact, the native perception of the Conquest differed sharply from the Spanish versionthey saw it as a native civil war in which the Spaniards played an important but secondary role. The Conquest, Restall shows, was more complexand more fascinatingthan conventional histories have portrayed it. Seven Myths of the Spanish Conquest offers a richer and more nuanced account of a key event in the history of the Americas. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. …

In den WarenkorbZustand: Fine. Washington, D.C., May 31, 1977., 1977. Fine. - A one-and-a-quarter-page letter consisting of over 175 words typed on two 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheets with the first page on "American College Theatre Festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts" letterhead. Writing as producing director of the American College Theatre Festival, David Young warmly conveys information to his friend and colleague Jean Dalrymple "I so enjoyed our meeting last week. I didn't feel it was work at all. I was particularly delighted to see your office and all the fond memories of the fine plays you have done - that I enjoyed so much all the years I lived in New York City." He goes on to list information about 2 "community Theatre" books as well as the dates of the American Theatre Association's National Convention in Chicago where she might speak to their Community Theatre National Board. He mentions enclosing the festival's shopping bag as a memento. Signed "David". The 2 pages are stapled at top left and folded for mailing. Else fine. Also included is a retained copy of Jean Dalrymple's reply dated June 20th apologizing for the delay as she wanted to write a "real letter" and not a thank you note. She then asks if he might have some photos from various community theatre groups he could share for the book that she is in the process of writing "The Complete Community Theatre Handbook". The teacher, actor and theatre director David Young (1928-2020) was the producing director for the American College Theatre Festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. As a professional actor, he'd appeared on NBC's "Medallion Theathre", as well as Off-Broadway and toured London, Winchester, Edinburgh, Moscow, Costa Rica, South Africa and the Salzburg Festival. He became producing director for the American College Theatre Festival in 1979, a position he held for 15 years and subsequently joined the faculty at the University of Florida. He taught throughout the world and was awarded the Kennedy Center National Partner Award for Lifelong Service to the Theater in 2012. The recipient, Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jos Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein, and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world. …

In den WarenkorbZustand: Fine. Washington, D.C., May 27, 1977., 1977. Fine. - Over 150 words typed on his 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide "ATA American Theatre Association" stationery. Responding to Jean Dalrymple, Jack Morrison writes "As to your question, how many community theaters there are including regional and school theaters--nobody knows!" "There probably are 'over 100,000' if you count every little company in a church basement or whatever in a given year." Though Peter Zeisler at Theatre Communication Group knows how many "regional professional theaters" there are, it's impossible to know how many amateur groups there are, especially if one considers "theater to be every high school that puts on at least one play a year." Signed "Jack". Folded for mailing with a pencil line by Jean Dalrymple indicating she has read the letter. Else, fine. The executive director of the American Theatre Association Jack Sherman Morrison (1912-1997) married James Cagney's sister Jeanne Cagney in 1953. He had served as director and dean of numerous university theatre programs before being appointed as executive director of the ATA. He was the recipient of the UCLA Life Achievement Award in 1980.
