Zustand: Fine. Washington, D.C., May 31, 1977., 1977. Fine. - A one-and-a-quarter-page letter consisting of over 175 words typed on two 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheets with the first page on "American College Theatre Festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts" letterhead. Writing as producing director of the American College Theatre Festival, David Young warmly conveys information to his friend and colleague Jean Dalrymple "I so enjoyed our meeting last week. I didn't feel it was work at all. I was particularly delighted to see your office and all the fond memories of the fine plays you have done - that I enjoyed so much all the years I lived in New York City." He goes on to list information about 2 "community Theatre" books as well as the dates of the American Theatre Association's National Convention in Chicago where she might speak to their Community Theatre National Board. He mentions enclosing the festival's shopping bag as a memento. Signed "David". The 2 pages are stapled at top left and folded for mailing. Else fine. Also included is a retained copy of Jean Dalrymple's reply dated June 20th apologizing for the delay as she wanted to write a "real letter" and not a thank you note. She then asks if he might have some photos from various community theatre groups he could share for the book that she is in the process of writing "The Complete Community Theatre Handbook". The teacher, actor and theatre director David Young (1928-2020) was the producing director for the American College Theatre Festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. As a professional actor, he'd appeared on NBC's "Medallion Theathre", as well as Off-Broadway and toured London, Winchester, Edinburgh, Moscow, Costa Rica, South Africa and the Salzburg Festival. He became producing director for the American College Theatre Festival in 1979, a position he held for 15 years and subsequently joined the faculty at the University of Florida. He taught throughout the world and was awarded the Kennedy Center National Partner Award for Lifelong Service to the Theater in 2012. The recipient, Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jos Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein, and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.
