Zustand: Nuevo. (.) Estávamos então em pleno Século da Luzes. Predominava a objectividade e o espírito racionalista, a consciência de civilização, o desejo de prestígio cultural. Relativamente à História assiste-se a um aumento da curiosidade científica e crítica em relação ao passado, verificando-se uma tendência para racionalizar, metodizar e laicizar a história. Os académicos têm consciência da carência de memórias históricas portuguesas e da falta de base científica das histórias anteriores. O culto do documento, do inventário e do rigor científico desenvolve novos métodos de trabalho como por exemplo o recurso a inquéritos enviados directamente "à fonte" pretendendo-se assim recolher informações "exactas e expurgadas de fantasia" de acordo afinal com as exigências da época. As "Memórias Paroquiais de 1758" são o resultado dessa prática setecentista de inquérito. O objectivo deste "esforço administrativo" era obter um maior conhecimento do território. Com o terramoto ocorrido no dia 1 de Novembro de 1755, ficaram sepultados, senão mesmo queimados, a maior parte dos manuscritos resultantes dos primeiros inquéritos setecentistas (.). ************************************************************* Designam-se normalmente por "Memórias Paroquiais" o conjunto de respostas produzidas pelos párocos aos inquéritos setecentistas elaborados entre 1721 e 1758, cujos manuscritos foram posteriormente organizados num conjunto de 44 volumes que se encontram actualmente na Torre do Tombo. "Memórias" por serem assim designadas na altura, as produções escritas, de carácter científico, ou literário ou destinadas a tratar acontecimentos ou informações referentes à época. "Paroquiais" por terem sido dirigidas aos párocos, uma vez que, eram aqueles que seguramente sabiam ler e escrever, e também por se referirem à paróquia que estes tinham à sua responsabilidade e da qual dariam as devidas informações. O primeiro inquérito foi promovido pela Academia Real da História, em 1721. O segundo pela Secre.

Também uma palavra de especial carinho a Graça Morais que prontamente cedeu uma imagem para a capa - a representação de uma mulher - que, e parafraseando a artista, bem pode ser a figuração de uma árvore forte, cheia de raízes e dotada de uma grande energia. Que o grande silêncio de que fala o título desta antologia se transforme em amplo som - reverberação das vozes que aqui vos apresentamos.
