A whimsical 1977 pictorial tourist map of Moloka'i, Hawaii, drawn by Fritz Alseth and printed by the Fisher Printing Company A Closer Look Covering the entire island of Molokai, the map combines a realistic bird's-eye view with cartoonish human and animal figures to highlight various historical sites and recreational activities, including hunting, golfing, and beachgoing. Sites around the island are labeled, including airfields, churches, lighthouses, hotels, agricultural sites (including a Del Monte pineapple plantation), and harbors. Notes, printed in the style of handwriting, and illustrations immediately around the map continue this intermingling of historical and recreational information. Around the border of the map are advertisements for local shops, banks, hotels, and restaurants. The verso includes a map of Kaunakakai, the largest town on the island, along with illustrations of some businesses there. Additional panels introduce the island's plants, animals, and general history and culture (the 'closest approximation of old-time Hawaii'). At the bottom-right are more advertisements, a panel for addressing the map in the mail, and an impressive cover illustration. Publication History and Census This map was illustrated by Fritz Alseth, also known as Fredric or Fred Alseth, printed by the Fisher Printing Company, and published by the Map Makers (a local firm about which nothing is known) in 1977, likely for the Molokai Chamber of Commerce. The OCLC notes two examples of the map at Ball State University and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. However, the presumed date of 1978 and the lack of a mention of the Fisher Printing Company or the Map Makers suggests that this might be a different edition. References: OCLC 13728672.…
