Third and Best Edition, substantially revised and enlarged. The Baron Ernouf's work was first published in two small volumes in 1868, with a second edition following a few years later. The present illustrated edition was entirely re-edited with the assistance of Jean Charles Adolphe Alphand, Director of the Public Works of Paris, and borrows from his two-volume elphant folio Les Promenades De Paris, 1867-1873, which was one of the most sumptuously produced works on urban public gardens and parks. The first part is devoted to a history of gardens, those of ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt, China, Japan, the Middle Ages, Italian Renaissance, France, and England, while the second is concerned with the principles governing irregular and landscape gardens, French formal gardens, modern parks and public squares, with discussion of terracing, plantings, trees and flowers, bridges, walkways, garden buildings, &c. There is a chapter on modern French parks, the Bois de Boulogne, the Bois de Vincennes, the Parcs des Buttes-Chaumont and Montsouris, and modern parks in Turkey, Egypt, and India. Vicaire III 590.

Haussmann hired Alphand as chief engineer of the Bois de Boulogne, a role which soon expanded into director of the newly formed parks department (Service des Promenades et Plantations), and later into an all-around director of public works. Under Napoleon III, Alphand participated in the renovation of Paris directed by Baron Haussmann between 1852 and 1870. He created walks, parks and gardens designed to embellish and sanitize Paris. He also remodeled the Bois de Vincennes and Bois de Boulogne. A wonderful example of his work.
