If the meaning of the latter term can be taken to embrace the etymology of words and the origin of endings and formative suffixes, then that is the method that I already had in mind. Unfortunately Rosenblat soon stumbles rather badly, in the august company it is true, of Meyer-Lübke, or possibly through an imperfect reading of a passage in the Grammaire des langues romanes (II, p. 463). After rightly pointing out that the French suffix AGE from -ATICU is originally masculine, he then asserts that it has become feminine in image, cartilage, putrilage, etc .
