Il est recueilli par les Allan, riches planteurs de Virginie qui l'emmènent en Angleterre, en Écosse et en Irlande, puis l'inscrivent à la célèbre pension de Stoke-Newington, près de… Londres. Il revient à Richmond en 1821 et entre en 1826 à l'Université de Virginie qu'il doit quitter au bout d'un an en dépit de ses succès, à la suite de dettes de jeu. Il va à Boston où il publie ses premiers vers, se fâche avec son père adoptif et s'engage dans l'armée ; il finira sergent-chef. La période de 1827 à 1829 est assez mal connue, il serait allé combattre les Turcs dans les rangs grecs et aurait séjourné à St-Pétersbourg. En 1830, il entre à l'Académie militaire de West Point et en est renvoyé pour indiscipline. Il rompt définitivement avec les Allan. Il gagne les deux prix fondés par une revue de Baltimore pour récompenser le meilleur poème et le meilleur conte, et devient critique littéraire au South Literary Messenger dont il assume bientôt la direction. Il se marie en 1836 avec sa jeune cousine, Virginia Clemm, et part avec elle pour New York d'où ils émigrent peu après vers Philadelphie (1837). Les Aventures de Gordon Pym ont paru en 1838 ; le premier recueil des Tales of the Grotesque and the Arabesque est publié en 1839. Poe, qui est à la tête du Graham's Magazine, est déjà célèbre en Europe. Mais en 1842, sa femme se rompt un vaisseau en chantant et, après maintes rechutes, meurt en 1847. Pour Edgar Poe qui l'adore, ce sont cinq ans de torture. Il s'est mis à boire et perd sa place. Il écrit cependant Eureka, poème philosophique. Il meurt d'une crise de delirium tremens le 5 octobre 1849. Son ?uvre (Le Corbeau, Histoires Extraordinaires, Nouvelles Histoires Extraordinaires) connaît un immense succès en France grâce à l'excellente traduction qu'en fait Charles Baudelaire (1848-1865). Auteur de rôle de plaisance, grand amateur de vagues et de tempêtes, Jacques Perret était tout désigné pour présenter Les Aventures d'Arthur Gordon Pym.

Upward Wrote A Number Of Now-Forgotten Novels: The Prince Of Balkistan (1895), A Crown Of Straw (1896), A Bride's Madness (1897), The Accused Princess (1900) (Source: Duncan, P. In 1908, Upward Self-Published A Book (Originally Written In 1901) Which He Apparently Thought Would Be Nobel Prize Material: The New Word. This Book Is Today Known As The First Citation Of The Word "Scientology", However There Was No Delineation In This Book Of Its Definition By Upward. It Is Unknown Whether L. Ron Hubbard, The Founder Of The Scientology-Organization, Knew Of This Book. In 1917 The British Museum Refused To Take Upward's Manuscripts, "On The Grounds That The Writer Was Still Alive," And Upward Burned Them. He Shot Himself In November 1926. Ezra Pound Would A Decade Later Satirically Remark That This Was Due To His Disappointment After Hearing Of George Bernard Shaw's Nobel Prize Award Which Shaw Won In 1925.
