[nice tight clean book, with no discernible wear; the jacket is also quite nice, with just a touch of wrinkling along the top edge of the front panel, and a hint of surface rubbing]. Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First UK Edition. First impression of the first UK edition, published in 1973. The book was originally published the previous year in the USA by McGraw-Hill Book Company, New York. With a six-page Introduction by Allen Ginsberg. Dustwrapper design by Len Payne. **…*PLEASE NOTE - this is a good ex-library reading copy. ***A good copy in pink cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked, but there are a couple of short splits to the cloth at the top of the spine (please see scans). Extremities of boards just slightly rubbed. Head and tail of spine creased. Page block edges quite foxed and browned. Light vertical reading crease to the spine, but no reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. There is a white Dewey library number at the bottom of the spine. Internally also good, but please note the following library marks: Command Lending Library HQ BAOR [stands for British Army On the Rhine] stamp to the front pastedown, remains of lending sheet on the front free endpaper, another small ink stamp on the printer's page. Interior pages quite clean, but a few handling marks as expected. No serious creases or tears - just some light creases tom a few pages (please see scans). ***In a very good colour-printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £2.95 net. The dustwrapper is complete with no chips or tears, and is actually very well preserved (having been protected by a library sleeve - now removed and replaced with a thin protective acetate cover). Some browning at the edges, particularly at the top corners. Head of spine and edges of dustwrapper very slightly rubbed and creased. Back panel of dustwrapper extremely clean (being a white background). Spine and front panel of dustwrapper bright. ***398 pages. 240mm x 160mm. ***'"This major novel by the late Jack Kerouac, written 1951-2, is one of his most important works. Never before published in its entirety, it has become, over the years, an underground legend. Here is the America of the late forties and early fifties that Kerouac knew so well and celebrated so magnificently -- the irresistible lure of the cross-country highways feverishly travelled by Jack Duluoz, the narrator of this book, and Cody Pomeray; the loneliness of diners and cafeterias and cheap hotels and 42nd street bars; the small towns passed through quickly, evoking boyhood memories; the all-night wine-drinking and pot-smoking sessions, where the music was Billie Holliday and Lester Young and Charlie Parker -- all this sense of superabundant reality informed by the knowledge of mortality: "I'm writing this book because we're all going to die --- my heart broke in the general despair and opened up inward to the Lord, I made a supplication in this dream." Here are the members of the Beat Generation as they were in the years before any label had been affixed to them. They were the precursors of the new consciousness that flowered in the late sixties. It was in Cody, with his raw energy, his endless thirst for experience, that Kerouac found his great American hero. And it was Cody who inspired some of his most memorable and poetic writing. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***First impression of the first UK edition of "Visions of Cody", in the dustwrapper. A good reading copy, albeit being an ex-library example. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Len Payne (Dustwrapper design) (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Very Good dj. First Edition. [light shelfwear, front hinge a little weak, otherwise a nice clean book; the jacket is modestly edgeworn, with some very minor paper loss and a bit of dog-earing at the top of the spine]. One of the more interesting and unusual anthologies of writings about life in th…e movie colony, not least because it rather disguises its anthological nature. This 571-page volume consists of 100 articles and book excerpts (the former drawn from both the industry trade press, such as The Hollywood Reporter and Daily Variety, and more general-interest/wide circulation publications like Look Magazine and The New York Times), yet there is no Table of Contents so that one can easily browse the list and zero in on pieces of individual interest. Rather, the book's front matter is presented in the style of movie credits ("Doubleday & Company, Inc. presents the Rivkin-Kerr Production" etc.), with all the authors' names listed in a single alphabetically-arranged bloc. Rivkin & Kerr (husband-and-wife writers, by the way) provide an interspersed running commentary throughout the book, in the form of a chatty discussion; their credit on the book itself is, in fact, "additional dialogue." This is all very cute and fun to read, and a good many of the pieces have not been anthologized or reprinted elsewhere -- but at the same time, if you spot a writer's name in that list of 100 that particularly intrigues you, you have to resort to the index (thank goodness there is one!) to track down his or her contribution. (In my case the name that jumped out at me was Horace McCoy, whose brief article "I Wish I Were a Writer" first appeared in The Hollywood Reporter in 1935" -- coincidentally (or not) the same year his great novel "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" was published.) But such editorial caveats aside, the book is still a treasure trove of insightful observations of the movie colony during its heyday. Here's just a small sampling of the writers represented: Charles Brackett, Ray Bradbury, Stan Freberg, Nunnally Johnson, Herman J. Mankiewicz, John O'Hara, Nicholas Ray, John Sanford, Rod Serling, George Stevens, Billy Wilder, and Fred Zinnemann. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this moderately heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order. As always at ReadInk, domestic Media Mail shipping is free.****. Illustrated by (dj design) George Maas (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Good dj. First Edition. [light soiling to top and bottom edges of covers, flowery gift inscription (non-authorial) on ffep, bookplate on front pastedown; jacket is trimmed roughly 1/8"-1/4" along top and bottom edges, small stain at upper right corner of rear panel]. "The adventures of a big-time s…windler, who starts a carefully organized campaign to swindle a rich, unworldly widow and becomes entangled in a tragic situation impossible to foresee." Basis for the 1946 Warner Bros. film of the same name, starring John Garfield and Geraldine Fitzgerald. The film had a long gestation period: an original Burnett story by that title (although it's not clear that the plot was the same) was purchased by Warner Bros. in August 1941, and its upcoming production was announced to star Humphrey Bogart and Ann Sheridan. According to Robin Smiley ("Firsts," January 2002), Burnett had finished the screenplay for the planned film by mid-1943, well before the book itself hit the shelves, and production was completed on the film in late 1944 by director Jean Negulesco, although "for some unknown reason" (Smiley) the studio didn't deign to release it until late 1946, purportedly after Garfield's star had ascended a bit after the success of MGM's THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE. (There may be more to the delay than that, however; some deeper research is clearly called for.). Illustrated by (dj design) Gene Allen (illustrator).

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 306 unmarked pages This noted Southern poet's only novel set during the Civil War. "The Fathers was published in 1938. It sold respectably in both the United States and England, perhaps because people expected it to be another Gone With the Wind, wheras it is in fact the novel Gone Wi…th the Wind ought to have been. Since its publication it has received very little attention, considering that it is one of the most remarkable novels of our time. Its occasion is a public one, the achievement and the destruction of Virginia's antebellum civilization. Within that occasion it discovers a terrible conflict between two fundamental and irreconcilable modes of existence, a conflict that has haunted American experience, but exists in some form at all times. The Fathers moves between the public and the private aspects of this conflict with an ease very unusual in American novels, and this ease is the most obvious illustration of the novel's remarkable unity of idea and form, for it is itself a manifestation of the novel's central idea, that "the belief widely held today, that men may live apart from the political order, that indeed the only humane and honorable satisfactions must be gained in spite of the public order, "is a fantasy." unmarked sharp secure age spot on the rear cover. Cover design by Lowell Naeve (illustrator).

Covers separated (worn, soiled, torn and chipped) but present. THE [AMERICAN] RED CROSS MAGAZINE seems to have started in 1916 as a pub…licity outlet for the Red Cross, and expanded during the buildup to the First World War, and the War itself. After the war it tried to become a more general monthly, billing itself as THE NEW RED CROSS MAGAZINE and as "The Magazine of a Better America," but it apparently went out of business with the October 1920 issue. Article by Ida Tarbell in this issue: Ida Minerva Tarbell (November 5, 1857 - January 6, 1944) was an American investigative journalist, biographer and lecturer. She was a leading muckrakers of the Progressive Era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and pioneered investigative journalism. Tarbell worked with the editor John Phillips at McClures and both resident at the same time and collaborated later. This issue has the fascinating article "Making American Citizens" by Ida Tarbell as well as other articles such as: Saving a Life, The Listening Gallery, March of the Red Cross, Better America, Red Cross at Home, Peter Rabbit Has an Exciting Evening, Billy Brad and the Middleman, and Helping Children to Health. Among the authors are: Anne Shannon Monroe, Emily Frances Robbins, Freeman Tilden, William G. Shepard, Clara Laughlin, Angelo Patri, Theodocia Peace, Benjamin De Casseres, Thornton Burgess, and Ellis Parker Butler. Among the Artists and Photographers whose work is presented are: Anna M. Upjohn, Angus MacDonall, William L. Finley, Irene Finley, H. T. Holman, F. R. Gruger, Albert Levering, Harrison Cady, J. R. Shaver, and Lewis W. Hine.
