Clint managed research and technology programs focused primarily on computer science and robotics during his time in government and industry. In 1984, he started the Autonomous Land Vehicle project while at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and is credited with starting the development of the technology base leading to today's driverless cars. He and his wife have photographed wildlife on every continent from the High Arctic to Antarctica with an emphasis on big cats, polar bears, and all 21 species of penguins. Their penguin travels are described in their book, In Pursuit of All the World's Penguins. Clint holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Missy Jelly had a degree in Art History from the University of Michigan. She co-chaired the successful Capital campaign to return Giant pandas to the National Zoo. Aside from the penguins, many of the locations highlighted in this work are also where several of the greatest explorations on the planet occurred. The authors tell about some of what they learned about Darwin, Shackleton, Amundsen, Scott and others. The authors discuss topics such as how observations of the Small Magellanic cloud changed our perception of the Universe, hoe the statues of Easter Island were moved and the role of the Haber-Bosch process in saving the Humboldt penguin.
