Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Engravings; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 24 pages; [Copyright 1881; binding circa early 1890s]. Porter & Coates, Philadelphia. Deluxe illustrated gift edition of Poe's iconic poem, here presented as a single-work volume. Square octavo bound in original cream cloth backed spine (unlettered) over heavy bevel-edged boards, elaborately stamped in silver and gilt with pictorial design to upper board. All edges gilt. Title page with "The Bells" only; illustrated by Darley, McCutcheon, Fredericks, Perkins, King, Riordan, and Northam. Comprises 24 heavy leaves printed recto only, each a full combination of verse and illustration. No added date to title or copyright page beyond the 1881 copyright statement; a period gift inscription dated June 1893 is present on the front blank, consistent with known Porter & Coates gift market issues of this title into the early 1890s. Mild shelf evidence to board edges; notable area of soiling/stain to lower left of upper board, with some additional light soiling and faint marks to board surfaces. Internally very clean and bright, binding sound. A visually striking example of this late Victorian gift edition of Poe's classic poem of mood and musicality, renowned for its hypnotic sound-driven structure and progressive emotional arc. VG or better.
