From the Introduction : "Indian subcontinent with its tropical and monsoonal climate receives an average annual rainfall of 105cms, which is largest anywhere in the world for a country of a comparable size. This precipitation spread over the country along with melting of glacial snow of the Himalayas resulted in the formation of large perennial Himalayan rivers viz., the Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra and other peninsular rivers viz., the Godavari, Krishna, Narmada, Tapti, Mahanadi, Cauveri originating from various mountain ranges and the Deccan plateau. These resulted in formation of 14 major rivers and several medium and minor rivers and innumerable streams which opens into the Bay of Bengal on the east coast and into the Arabian Sea on the west coast of India. "The confluence regions of the rivers with the sea forms a complex zone of aquatic ecosystem i.e. estuaries. The area and extent of estuarine region of each river depends on the season, freshwater drainage through the river and geographical nature of the coastal region at that point. Along with the estuaries many large lagoons such as Chilka, Pulicat, Ashtamudi, Vembanad and several vast structures of backwaters on east and west coast of India, created mixed water (brackish water) habitat, spread over in an area of approximately 7000 sq. kms. "The brackish water ecosystem comprising estuaries, lagoons, backwaters and mangrove forests is a complex and 218 pp.

Hardbound. Zustand: As New. New. Contents Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. Zoological nomenclature. 3. Species concept. 4. Natural history museums. 5. Faunal resource. 6. Faunal resource analysis invertebrate diversity in India. 7. Chordate diversity in India. 8. Areas rich in faunal resources. 9. Terrestrial ecosystem. 10. Faunal resource in Eastern Himalaya. 11. Island ecosystem. 12. Glossary. Selected references. India's immense biological diversity encompasses ecosystems populations species and their genetic make up. This diversity can be attributed to the vast variety in physiographic and climatic situations resulting in a diversity of ecological habitats ranging from tropical subtropical temperate alpine to desert. Documentation of faunal resource of a country therefore focuses on developing indicators to be used in the assessment which are reflected in combination of ecological fundamentals such as biodiversity critical habitat and key ecological relationships site specific considerations environmental stress and potential impacts. The present book focuses on the importance of taxonomic nomenclature and its regulation species concept role of natural history museums followed by the species inventory and diversity in different ecological conditions. An attempt has also been made to assess the economic value of the taxon at different levels and the conservation efforts initiated to sustain the biodiversity against the anthropogenic influences. The glossary at the end will help in understanding the terminologies employed while compiling the book. 428 pp.
