This book explores the confluence of Late Antique literature and visual culture in the Kingdom of Asturias, focusing on the artistic trends of the reign of Alfonso II (791-842). The research is focused on the content of the literary works available to the chroniclers of Alfonso III, who wrote their works forty years after the death of Alfonso II, in particular on the use of the Latin version that Rufinus of Aquileia (c. 403) made of Eusebius of Caesarea?s Historia Ecclesiastica, which preserves a narrative of the life of the first Christian emperor, Constantine I (306-337). All the visual evidences point to the emulation of the Constantinian ideal: the devotion and instrumentalisation of the Cross, the related liturgical feasts and the symbolic representation of the True Cross, through the use of the Constantinian vision?s motto in Oviedo, the parallelism between the inuentio Petri and the inuentio Iacobi, and even the similarity of the funeral arrangements of both Christian rulers. Se interesa por el contenido de las obras literarias al alcance de los cronistas de Alfonso III, que escribieron sus obras cuarenta a?os después de la muerte de Alfonso II, en particular por el empleo de la versión latina que Rufino de Aquilea (c. 403) hizo de la Historia Ecclesiastica de Eusebio de Cesarea, que transmite una narrativa de la vida del primer emperador cristiano, Constantino I (306-337). Todos los testimonios visuales registrados apuntan a la emulación de ese ideal constantinano: la devoción e instrumentalización de la Cruz, las fiestas litúrgicas, la representación simbólica de la Vera Cruz, a través del uso del lema de la visión constantiniana en Oviedo, el paralelismo entre la inuentio Petri y la inuentio Iacobi, e incluso la similitud de las disposiciones funerarias de ambos gobernantes cristianos. Estos testimonios consolidan la legitimación del Reino asturiano a través de una memoria cultural en la que la idea de Roma y la del Reino visigodo de Toledo juegan un papel primordial.…
