Top edges gilt. James Logan (1797-1872) was a Scottish author on Gaelic culture, best known for his book The Scottish Gaël. The work was first published in 1831, and was based on walking tours he had made in the Scottish highlands and islands during the previous decade, during which he collected Gaelic antiquities. The work encompasses a wide range of topics, from archaeology to early 19th-century Gaelic literature, and includes chapters on war, arms, dress, hunting, food, poetry and music, and religion. It also contains much valuable commentary on highland mores and traditional lore. The two volumes are uniformly bound in green buckram covered boards with gold titling on the spines (we are uncertain if this was the original binding). The cases of the books are in very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and light bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few light marks and some soiling to page 65 in volume 1. There is a little light foxing on the fore edge of the text blocks. The endpapers are slightly foxed and the free endpapers are browned. There is no inscription. PLEASE NOTE: This is a fairly heavy set and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK.

Includes information about Scottish communion customs and their associated cups and tokens, as well as baptismal vessels; A thorough volume, which also contains a chapter devoted to Scottish hallmarks. One of 175 signed copies on large paper, of which this is No. 91. This work is profusely illustrated throughout with 105 in-text figs and numerous plates, including 20 tissue-guarded photogravures. Ex-library copy with stamp at top and bottom paper edges, bookplate on inside of front cover, and library printed reference notice on inside of back covers. Only the 20 tissue-guarded photogravures are water-stained along edges. The other plates and pages are absolutely clean. Binding in overall very good, interior in good to very good condition.

On aged, brittle paper, with slight wear and discoloration, a few closed tears along folds and traces of stub adhering to second leaf, but with entire text clear and intact. A long untidy letter, with writing u…p the margin on outer two pages. Addressed to 'The Revd. A J D'Orsey' and signed 'Tom Taylor'. The topic is an outbreak of cholera at Madeira, about which D'Orsey has clearly launched an appeal. (He may well be the author of the letter on the subject quoted from in The Medical Times, 4 October 1856.) Begins: 'Dear Sir / I remember you perfectly as my class fellow at Glasgow. [Taylor had spent two sessions there before going up to Cambridge.] I am very sorry that your letter finds me making holiday in the country, instead of at my office, the Genl Bd of Health in London'. (Taylor was appointed Assistant Secretary to the Board of Health in 1850, and was Secretary from 1854 to the Board's abolition in 1858.) Had he been at his post he would have been 'in the very centre of such information as you require'. All he can do is 'write by this post to Mr Session, our Medical Officer, sending him your [?] & letter & requesting him to transmit to you sets of all the Papers in the Office likely to be of practical service to you in your efforts to invetigate for the present, a guard for the future against, the terrible visitation which has befallen Madeira.' If Taylor can in any way 'direct public attention to the sad case of that island it will give me satisfaction to do so, but I shd. think the facts, imperfectly known as they are, wd. speak trumpet-tongued.' 'English benevolence', he feels, 'is seldom backward to relieve distant & strange distress' (the recent Potato Famine in Ireland is presumably too close to home), and 'Madeira is both far off enough & startling enough to rouse the sensibilities of this country.' He is 'far off from even a country town' (he cannot even 'procure a Post Office order' to send a 'mite' towards D'Orsey's appeal), but is sure that Session will be 'prompt' and the books will reach D'Orsey in time. In a postscript he gives his 'address for the next week'.

His fame in his own lifetime rested on two works, Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth (1770), an attack on Hume, and The Minstrel (1771-74), contained in this collection, an autobiographical poem in Spenserian stanzas. In describing the formation of a poet's mind, The Minstrel emphasizes the effect of nature; the poem influenced the 19th-century romantics, particularly Lord Byron.
