Benjamin are irreconcilable over the marriage of their daughter, the former Mrs. Alexander Dallas Bache Pratt, to Preston Gibson was made known in the Supreme Court yesterday when they filed suit to terminate the trust of $200,000 created by Mrs. Gibson for her children, Cynhia and Dallas Bache Pratt, 2d, under which they are to be maintained until they are of age, and after reaching their majority are to get the full income from the trust. The fund was created Dec. 27 last. Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin say that their daughter married Preston Gibson on Oct. 17.Preston Gibson (1880-1937) was a prominent society figure and a playwright. The son of Randall L. Gibson, U.S. Senator and Representative of Louisiana, Gibson was extremely wealthy. Like his father, he attended Yale University, where he was a star athlete. During World War I, he was one of the first Americans to volunteer with the French army. From 1916 to 1918 he fought with the French Ambulance Corps and the American Ambulance Corps, and received the Croix to Guerre for bravery. Upon returning to the United States he enlisted in the Marines and broke records as a recruiting sergeant.Gibson was married and divorced four times: first to Minna Field (niece of Marshall Field and stepdaughter of Thomas Nelson Page), then to Grace McMillan Jarvis (granddaughter of U.S. Senator James McMillan), Beatrice Benjamin Pratt (daughter of the Boston publisher William Everts Benjamin and granddaughter of Henry H. Rogers of the Standard Oil Company), and finally to Evelyn Harris Spaulding. His multiple marriages caused a certain amount of scandal. He had three sons--Henry Field Gibson, James McMillan Gibson, and Henry Spaulding Gibson--and a daughter, Marie Preston Gibson. Gibson died at the age of 57 from heart disease.Provenance: Lt.-Col. He was the son of Robert George Duff and Mary Astley. He was baptised on 19 June 1851 at Ryde, Isle of Wight.The name change from Duff to Assheton-Smith came as a result of the d…eath in 1859 of his mother's aunt, the childless but wealthy widow of Thomas Assheton Smith MP (1776-1858). The estate at Vaynol in Wales passed from the deceased widow to George William (Duff) Duff-Assheton-Smith (1848-1904), the elder brother of Charles Garden Duff, together with the exotic animal collection that was kept on the parklands which were part of the Vaynol estate. These included "wild bears and [allegedly] wild white cattle". The name came with the property. Although sources do not spell it out, this was almost certainly an express term included in the will of the deceased as a condition for inheriting the property. When George William (Duff) Duff-Assheton-Smith (1848-1904) died he was not childless. However, there was "only" a daughter, so the lands were transferred not to his own child but to his younger brother, the Charles Garden Duff who is the principle focus of this page. This was again conditional on taking the name that went with the estate, so Charles Garden Duff became Charles Garden Assheton-Smith. Further advancement came with the coronation in London of a new British King George V and His Queen in June 1911. Charles Garden Assheton-Smith was among those who became a baronet."He married, firstly, Hon Maud Frances Vivian, daughter of Charles Crespigny Vivian, 2nd Baron Vivian, of Glynn and of Truro, and Mary Elizabeth Panton, on 16 February 1875 at Bangor, County Down, Ireland."He married, secondly, Mary Elizabeth Brinsley Sheridan, daughter of Algernon Thomas Brinsley Sheridan and Mary Lothrop Motley, on 10 July 1894. According to the latter: 'On his retirement in November 1910, Holmes published What is and What Might Be (1911), a condemnation of the existing education system, which stressed competition rather than co-operation, emphasized visible results, and demanded the mechanical…obedience of the child. The book attracted wide public attention. [.] Shortly before his retirement, he became involved in the furore over the so-called 'HolmesMorant circular', a highly confidential memorandum which he had issued in January 1910 to inspectors'. The two letters are in fair condition, lightly aged and ruckled; Holmes's letter with light water tide mark around edges. Both with postage folds. ONE: Custance to Sandeman. The information about 'Homer Lee's book [Lee (1851-1923) was an American engraver and inventor] is interesting, not to say amusing'. Reference to 'Gen. Chaffee's introduction' and Lee's apparent service in the American army and 'Chinese service'. 'A great number of people on this side were taken in by him. Personally I always thought he presented a very exaggerated view.' Turning to 'the Holmes pamphlet', which was given to Custance by 'an American Admiral', he discusses the 'very much amplified edition' titled 'What is and what might be', and how to acquire it. Ends: 'A friend of mie tells me that the ideal school is a [real?] one.' TWO: Holmes to Sandeman. ALS. 19 August [1911]. 2pp, 16mo. Addressed to 'Lt. Col. J. G. Sandeman M. V. O.' and signed 'E. G. A. Holmes'. 'My pamphlet on Sompting School [the school Holmes had set up in East Sussex] is not on sale; but I have written to the Printers and asked them to send you 4 copies.' He cannot spare more than four, as 'the stock is running very low, and half of it belongs to a friend of mine who paid back the whole cost to the printers'. With two cuttings: Custance's Who's Who entry, and a brief advertisement for Holmes's book.

In 1878 Oliver Wendell Holmes, a fellow Brahmin, wrote a memorial biography which was devoted to a defense of the former minister and a repudiation of his recall. John Jay, who had succeeded Mr. Motley in Vienna, published his own defense of him in 1877. Mr. Grant, after leaving the presidency, wrote a letter to the New York Herald reiterating that his reason for dismissing Mr. Motley was solely that he had failed to carry out his duties. Mr. Grant restated this charge a few years later in a Cairo interview, while he was on a world tour, concluding that he had no ill will toward Mr. Motley who "?like other estimable men, made mistakes, and Motley made a mistake which made him an improper person to hold office under me.".Provenance: Lt.-Col. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Rifle Brigade. He was appointed Member, Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.).

As a popular historian, he is best known for his wo…rks on the Netherlands, the three volume work The Rise of the Dutch Republic and four volume History of the United Netherlands. As United States Minister to Austria in the service of the Abraham Lincoln administration, Motley helped to prevent European intervention on the side of the Confederates in the American Civil War. He later served as Minister to the United Kingdom (Court of St. James) during the Ulysses S. Grant administration.In December , 1870 Mr. Motley sent a 62-page dispatch to Secretary Fish, titled "End of a Mission," in which he protested his recall and recounted the events leading to the dispatch of November 10. The Secretary followed with an even longer rejoinder sent, not to Motley, who was no longer in an official position and hadn't been when he had sent the dispatch, but to the chargé d'affaires, Benjamin Moran. Senator Sumner upbraided Mr. Grant and Mr. Fish on the Senate floor, then had the Senate publish all the documents related to the recall.
