Once an industrial town, many houses were constructed for workers with limited means, including simple shotgun houses built by cigar-makers. In contrast, the grand Heritage House, Cosgrove House, Hemingway House, and Southernmost House boast unique and proud histories. The architectural landscape also includes eyebrow houses, shotgun houses, and "Conch Victorians," crafted by ship's carpenters who relied on memories of vessels and seaport homes rather than formal plans. Elements like widow's walks were inspired by New England, while overhanging eaves (eyebrows) drew from West Indian influences.
