Cloth with dustjacket. Zustand: Gut. 201 Ps. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Good Condition - This book is a studythe first of its kind of Roman attitudes toward the Greek world It shows what Romans of the governing class thought about the Greeks, both past and contemporary, and considers the practical effects of philhellenic sentiment in Roman politics. It is also a survey of Roman attempts to assimilate Greek literature. The first two chapters discuss the faults and virtues of the Greeks, as the Romans saw them, and examine Roman views on the use of the Greek language and the function of Greek art. Later chapters discus: the Roman reading of Homer, the interpretation of Greek history and the Greek historians, the value placed on Greek rhetorical theory and the disputed claim that rhetoric is an art, and the problems faced by writers who endeavoured to turn Greek philosophy into Latin. Most educated Romans conceded that Greece had provided models and standards of literary excellenceHomer, Demosthenes and Plato were read with enthusiasmbut this did not deter them from attempting to create a new literature designed to surpass the Greek. In literature, as in politics, their philhellenism was qualified : they took comfort in the idea that the creative period of Greek was in the past and they thought that Roman good sense could take over for its own purposes whatever seemed useful and relevant in Greek. They believed that their own subject matterthe imperial achievement of Rome and the pristine virtues of the Roman characterwas far more important than anything described or exaggerated by the Greeks, and they were confident that the Latin language could do justice to new and old themes alike. Latin had qualities which could commemorate the Roman experience with power and majesty. By referring to leading Roman authors from the Ciceronian age to the second century a.d., the author shows in detail what Greek they knew and how they used their knowledge. Passages of Greek and Latin are translated in the text and are documented fully in the notes and references. There have been many studies of the debt of individual Roman writers to the Greeks, but this survey by general categories will be particularly useful to all students of Greek and Roman civilization and will appeal to everyone who is interested in the changing fortunes of Hellenism.
