History of the town of Irvington, located in central New Jersey in Essex County. In pre-history, the area was occupied by the Awkinges-awky or Hackensacks, a sub-tribe of the Lenni Lenape. The first white settlers arrived in 1666 when two or three small vessels carrying 30 families originally from Connecticut Colony sailed up the Passaic River. By the middle of the 18th century, the area, known as West Farms, had farms and mills but a bitter conflict erupred over a dispute over land titles. During the American Revolution, West Farms was squarely behind the independence movement and the town sent some 40 men to the patriot cause from the town now known as Irvington. Until the mid-1800s, the town was known as Camptown but after Stephen Foster published his song "Camptown Races", locals, not wanting to be particularly associated with it, changed the town name to Irvington in honor of author Washington Irving. The town was incorporated in 1874. It was home to one of the beloved Amusement spots in new Jersey, Olympic Park, which operated from 1887 to 1965.
