The first English language edition of al-Shamlan's original in Arabic (2 volumes, published in 1975 and 1978), translated by Peter Clark and edited by William Facey. Based on the author's personal recollections as well as documentary and oral sources including divers, ship masters and pearl merchants, it describes the last years of the pearling industry from 1900-30: "the grim conditions of the divers, their food, their work and the tools of their trade, their illnesses and the hazards of life at sea.". There is a glossary of Gulf marine terms. The maps show Kuwait and the northern Gulf. The illustrations (some of which credited to Shakespear) show sailing vessels, divers and crew, and members of the author's family.
